“Today, researchers at the University of Missouri and the University of Massachusetts released a study that found that female mice exposed to mixtures of chemicals used in UOG [unconventional oil and gas] operations during prenatal development had abnormal mammary glands in adulthood. Additionally, some of the mice developed pre-cancerous mammary lesions that may suggest they will be more sensitive to chemicals that cause cancer. …

“We examined 23 UOG contaminants and compounds commonly used or produced in the fracking process.” In the study, female mice were exposed to various amounts of the 23 UOG chemicals from gestational day 11 to birth. Although no effects were observed on the mammary glands of these females prior to puberty, in early adulthood, female mice developed mammary lesions and hyperplasia, a condition that causes enlargement of an organ or tissue. “We chose varying amounts of the UOG mixture in order to mimic a range of human exposures to these chemicals.” ...

The study, “Prenatal exposure to unconventional oil and gas operation chemical mixtures altered mammary gland development in adult female mice” was published in the journal Endocrinology." Authors of the study: Laura N. Vandenberg and Sarah A. Sapouckey of the University of Massachusetts Amherst in Amherst, MA; Susan C. Nagel of University of Missouri-Columbia; and Christopher D. Kassotis of Duke University in Durham, N.C.

LOL

With Paul Heckbert, He does serve a purpose here,

And that is, without folks like him and his negative postings many of us will accept whatever they read without a thought!

Who  knows?  Maybe he is right!

My own opinion is that he  just likes to stir the pot!

I totally agree with Heckbert and share his deep concern for the reproductive ability of mice everywhere as I have already noticed the great American mouse shortage.

Not to worry.  Once we have more windmills in place to chop up more birds of prey, the mice population will thrive once again.

This is terrible news for anyone who drinks mouse milk!

This may very well be the end to fracking as we know it!

Even our pet hamsters may not be safe.

Well....there you have it....definitive proof, because 'some of the mice developed precancerous lesions'....my question....how many is 'some'? One, fifty, three hundred? What percentage of mice showed symptoms?

How many mice were in this study, and, more importantly, did they ALL sign consent forms to be in this study?

My next email is going directly to PETA!!

Sounds like they came up with a new mouse trap. Good job frackers keep up the good work.

About the doses used in the experiments:

"Nagel and colleagues used four different doses — the two lowest doses were similar to what you might find in drinking water in areas near oil and gas operations, and the higher doses were comparable to wastewater puddles on work sites near fracking, said senior author Laura Vandenberg, a researcher and assistant professor at the University of Massachusetts–Amherst School of Public Health & Health Sciences.

They saw effects on all exposed mice.

“Even at low doses we’re seeing lesions in the mammary gland,” Vandenberg said.

... The 23 chemicals in the mixture are all known endocrine disruptors and have previously been show to either mimic or interfere with certain hormones."

Excessive road salt can rust your car or truck in a couple years.Do you think that effects the mice.

I have a problem with this....the operative words in the statement below being similar and might.....

Nagel and colleagues used four different doses — the two lowest doses were similar to what you might find in drinking water in areas near oil and gas operations,

So have they actually found these concentrations in drinking water near O&G operations? If so, were the wells/drinking water chemicals traced back to a particular well pad? If not, why not?

As usual, the entire study is shrouded in ambiguities and innuendo, financed by the Left to further their Green agenda.

“Kassotis et al. then evaluated the effects of a 23-chemical mixture of UOG [unconventional oil & gas] chemicals (UOG-MIX) on male mice ... Male mice exposed to environmentally relevant doses of UOG-MIX during prenatal development displayed … decreased sperm counts; … alterations to the weight of additional organs including the heart and thymus (13). …

Importantly, the effects that were observed in this study occurred at low doses; the two lowest dose groups (MIX-3 and MIX-30) are equivalent to the concentrations measured in drinking water in regions experiencing drilling while the highest dose group (MIX-3000) is equivalent to the concentrations of many UOG-MIX components measured in industry wastewater.”

The fracking chemicals tested:

  • 1,2,4-Trimethylbenzene

All you need to know about this bogus study is this,

The team of researchers was turned down for funding by the National Institutes for Health

because it was determined that their work was not good enough for funding. Why?

Because the teams previous work had been shown to be biased and lacking in sound

scientific methodology. Further, one of the lead researchers regularly speaks publicly

against oil and gas development.

In turn they reached out to well known anti-fracking-activists Josh Fox, Mark Ruffalo and

Yoko Ono.

Finally, Paul spends a great deal of time citing concentrations found in the study as if those

concentrations might be found in sources of water consumed by humans. First problem:

it is not the concentrations that are important, it's the dosage, humans rarely consume as

much water as was fed to the mice. Next: it has never been shown that the chemicals cited

have been found in any unsafe quantity in drinking water anywhere. The mice were force fed the

water, thus raining the amount of chemicals ingested.

In in other words, this teams work has once again been shown to be shoddy and lacking in any

in scientific methodology and has been completely debunked once again (this is the third time).

Just more Chicken Little stuff.
