Ohio drilling industry gathers amid tax fight

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) - Hundreds of representatives of Ohio's growing shale gas industry are gathering in Columbus in one of their biggest meetings of the year.

The 3,200-member Ohio Oil and Gas Association winter meeting Thursday comes as the industry is fighting Republican Gov. John Kasich's proposed tax increase on large-scale oil and gas extraction.

Kasich says Ohio's severance tax rate is among the lowest in the country. He has incorporated an increase into a tax policy overhaul that includes cuts to income, small-business and sales taxes, while expanding the sales tax to more services.

Ohio Treasurer Josh Mandel will open an afternoon business meeting. He will be followed by a legislative panel featuring Ohio House Speaker William Batchelder and a policy update by Tom Stewart, the association's executive vice president.

This is a danger to Ohio's future.  We can't let Kasich force landowners to disproportionatly carry the states burdens on their backs.  Kasich is quick to point out that Ohio has a lower severence tax rate than Texas, Dah....they don't have a state income tax in Texas.  Kasich also wants to raise the state sales tax rate.

POTS needs to have a representative to lead us on a decission on this issue.  I am not yet well read on this issue, where's our spokesman and legal team.  Where's David Perotto, our financial guy?

I have been speaking to legislators in Columbus about this issue and others.

It appears at this point the severance tax doesn't have enough support, even among Republicans.

People need to call their state rep and state senator and voice their opposition.

Did you mean to say even among Dems? 

We have sparred a bit on this topic in the past.  Aside from Kasich's tax plans bleeding of “Spend & Tax” “Wealth Redistribution” and “Socialism” the severance tax increase is on the backs of  land and O&G rights owners and the only expanding industry to develop in Eastern Ohio in decades. By raising the severance tax to lower the income tax rate (a very small %) he is trying to buy the popular vote.  What folks don't understand is that by raising the sales tax rate also, that little decrease in income tax will be given back many times over thru increased sales taxes.  Kasich thinks he can buy the common vote when really we will all pay more.  Increased sales taxes hurt the less fortunate even more.  His proposed tax plan will hurt most Ohioans. Kasich's tax plans are despicable at best and his proposed severance tax increase will cripple the royalties of most O&G rights owners with “old” or “bad” leases and possibly deter future development by the industry.
