Could someone tell me some of the perameters of a typical drilling unit. Do they start at the bore sight or not till they go horizontal? Also , for one bore how wide would the unit be? Please add any other info you may know.

Matthew, Thanks for the help, I tried the sight but my computer only came up with a bunch of text. I guess i need to download google earth.

You don't say where you are but I attached an example of a unit in Ohio. The permits I've seen all bore N30°W and the number of acres seems to be controlled by the length of the bore. ORC says they must stay at least 500 feet off the bore line.. so you get these 1000 foot strips as drilling units. The unit includes the pad area and a diagonal to the point they hit the shale then it follows the horz bore. Hope this helps. Not sure about PA or WV

Steven, Thanks that was a big help.

Steven,

Is the entry point where the vertical well is located? Are the lines with (grid) the horizontial bores?

I think the surface location is the pad and the entry point is where the bore hits the shale and starts to go horz then the end (bottom hole) is the end of horz bore. I've been told that these permits will be amended for another bore 1000 foot parrallel to this one. The interesting thing is that the pad area is included in the drilling unit but I don't see how they can produce from this area.. ?
Any pros out there that might know which direction the units in hanover township columbiana cnty ohio might be going?

Not a Pro here but.. You can find all this info on the DNR site at the interactive page..

http://www.ohiodnr.com/geosurvey/apps/IMSapps/

zoom into the area where the well is then turn on the well layers and pick the well you want. when you get zoomed in close enough the well bores should show up.

Steven , Thank you I had not run across that part of the odnr site .

Go to the ALOV website. Down the left side of the page they have posted a number of the permitted drilling units. It appears that they all run NW to SE or vice versa. Probably due to the strata.

http://alov.us

There is also a good lease on the page.    Randy

Randall , that website was also helpful.

Why are the units small?
Most of the permits are around 180 acres but if they amend the permit and drill two more parallel bores and then go the opposite direction (180°) with three more.. now you have 1080 acres with six wells on one pad.. just speculation as I don't know .. anybody have thoughts on this ?
