What is the difference between producing and drilling units in Ohio

A well  has just been permitted. The horizional well  on the proposed map will be within 200 ft of our

property. From looking at other wells in the area there is usually 500Ft  on each side of the well.If the well does not run thru our property will we get some type royalities,  when the well is drilled and hopefully produces.

This is a good question that I have wondered about too. I have heard that they need a 640 acre drilling unit to drill. I have seen maps of units that are only 160+/- acres on the ODNR web site. Where is the rest of the 640 acres? I have heard that the either 640 or 1280 acres is the drilling unit and the production unit is the 160+/- acres they drill on and that every one in the drilling 640 or 1280 acre drilling unit would get a royalty from the 1 or more production units that are in the drilling unit.I am NOT SURE if that is correct, can anyone clarify this?

It depends upon where the lateral starts and ends. The 500 feet is from the lateral not the well pad.  Unit next to my farm has six laterals and the pad is 300 feet from my property but I have no acreage in the unit.  If the unit was just permitted it will show up on the ODNR web site in couple of months and you can pull up the unit plat.
