I am also a fan...and member of the Mohican Basin Landowners group.  Very dedicated and hard working leadership over these many months but membership drive is closing Dec 1st.  Last I've heard is that well over 1,000 have joined and over 100,000 acres.  The final tally should be interesting as all this has happened since Feb 2011.

My brothers and I have 45 acres unleased acreage in Plain Twp./Wayne County and wondered if anyone has heard of any companies that have expressed interest in that area other than Avalanche.

Not stepping on my toes at all Rich. I agree with you completely about being in a group. Some of my neighbors and I have formed NEWWS Landowners (Neighbors of Eastern Wayne & Western Stark) Group because of some of the "offers" that have been floated by outfits like Avalanche recently. Our group encompasses the other part of Wayne where Mohican leaves off. Our nucleus is in Baughman and Green townships but I look for that to expand quickly. I am part of another large group in SE Ohio and bring that experience with me. We have a talented attorney in our corner who has negotiated some land groups in SE OH recently and has also been successful in getting some HBP properties freed up for a second lease on the deep rights. We are just getting off the ground but I believe we have a recipe for success. The key is getting landowners educated, organized, and prepared for the time when the serious oil and gas producers come calling.

Further update on the Mohican Basin group - we will not be having any more meetings.  We are going to concentrate on signing landowners in the areas where we already have quite a few members.  That means SW Wayne, NW Holmes, NE Knox, and SE Ashland counties.  We are trying to get as solid a block of members as we can.  We will continue to welcome new members in those areas, but membership will close on December 1.  After that we will start taking bids on our lands with our lease.

I'm not trying to step on Finnbear's toes here. It's just that you all will do much better for yourselves if you get in some group.

Become familiar with SB 165, the revisions to our gas and oil drilling law. Among other things, you will find out there is no future on planning to be a holdout within a drilling unit. The Unitization clause permits the driller to force your land into the unit - at the cheapest price they paid for any part of it.

You really need to be in a group or have the money and chops to hire an exceptionally talented attorney on your own. Remember, you are essentially playing high stakes poker with companies who have already invested over $1,500,000,000.00 in leaseholds in this state. I think their pockets are a bit deeper than yours.

Is there anyone here besides Steve Myers and myself who are in the Mohican Basin group? It's big, started in the Wayne/Holmes/Ashland/Knox intersection area. The region is mostly in the Columbia Gas storage lease area and the main concern is that Columbia seems to think a storage lease gives them rights to drill above and below the Clinton in addition to storing gas in the Clinton. Our attorney thinks otherwise and is so convinced he's right and able to prevail that he is working strictly on a commission basis. If you're in the southwest part of the county, watch the Daily Record (Here and There) and listen to QKT for announcements about meetings. Attend one and at least buy the $5 (printing cost) booklet. It contains a copy of the 26 page landowner friendly lease that the ALOV signed, with explanatory notes. You owe it to yourself and your family to invest a couple of hours in getting informed.

James - if you are in the Wayne County area and have not been contacted yet, odds are very high that there is some kind of lease on your property. You can go to the county recorders office in Wooster, ask the very patient ladies some questions, and begin to educate yourself about leases. I strongly suggest you find a local group of landowners to associate with. Some are for-profit and some are not. Look around, go to a meeting or two.

For your drilling question, it's a matter of putting more pressure on one part of the bit than on the others. The turns are not sharp - the radius is quite large actually - but the drill operator knows within an amazingly small error window exactly where the thing is. Recall the incident involving the Chilean miners a year or so ago. Drillers hit a small diameter air shaft from about a half mile away - on the first try and exactly when they expected to hit it.

Can anyone tell me how I can put my name or property out there in order to lease my land out to a driller? I am just looking for a fair & honest lease.
