Front Page of Today's Oil City Derrick says "Shell intends to build cracker plant in Monica, Beaver County"

If this comes about, it would be great for the local economy as well as landowners that are leased and seeking to lease...

Does anyone have updated information on the status of this?  The last I heard, Shell asked for an extension?

Have other papers covered this story? If Shell has made decision to build cracker plant in Monaca, I would think it would be a major story and that Pittsburgh newspapers would have the story. I hope my skepticism is unfounded. Someone might call the Oil City Derrick and inquire as to the source of their story!

It was in the Butler Eagle a few days ago, that Gov Corbit doesn't expect a decision until January of next year.

The Butler Eagle story is probably correct It is sad that optimistic stories get started and then people's hopes are dashed. It appears that leasing has slowed to a near halt in Venango County and possibly in Crawford and Mercer Counties as well. I wonder if the O&G in these counties is less good than originally thought? Perhaps recovering gas and oil from these western Pennsylvania counties has proved more difficult than anticipated. Who knows?

It is unfortunate that it is taking so long for this project to get started.    It will be a great thing for that region.

- Cheap, homegrown raw materials for plastics.

- More demand and uses for wet gas.

- lots of local jobs.

Yes, if it's built in Monaca, Pa. The Governor of West Virginia seems pretty confident that its going to be built in West Virginia. The proposed site in Pa may have some pretty severe environmental problems as I believe it was used to refine nickel ores or something like that.

Lead smelter.

I was reading a thread on GMS for pipeline right of ways and the thread seemed to show that a ROW was being purchased for a pipeline towards Monaca.   Might be a good idea for shell to get infrastructure like that before they make any anouncements of the plant location.

Owner, very positive news appreciate it. It is easy to get on here and start touting every negative that you can possibly throw at something. In everyones best interest not do do that.

I agree with your comment 100% but it  is sometimes hard to find the balance between not being unduly negative  or unduly positive. For example, Halcon stock is getting killed. A few weeks ago, Jim Cramer touted the stock as a buy. Since then, its down 30% or more and down over 10% today. Halcon's activities in Mercer County seem concentrated in Mercer County. Few if any permits for horizontal wells have been obtained by any O&G company this year for Crawford  County and none for Venango County. I think these facts are problematic but I hope they mean nothing in the long run. I have vague information that Halcon's Allam welll in Venango County is going to yield dry gas. If so, that is at least a small negative for Venango and also for Halcon. Given that all wells to date in Crawford, Mercer, and Venango County are considered by O&G companies to be exploratory wells, the aggregate results of these wells will help define the so-called "window" and perhaps a so-called sweet spot. In summary, we are all hoping for the best; but we need to be realistic when negative facts are right before our eyes.

Replying to a comment about pipeline right of ways that indicate good news about the possibility of cracker plant becoming a reality. What in the world does Halcon Stock price and  speculation about wet or dry gas relating to a well that has not even been test flared have to do with the reply?

Your point is well taken. It has nothing to do with that but I do think it relates to your general point of not being too negative (or too positive) generally. There are a lot of people in both Venango and Crawford County 6-9 months ago who were pretty high on getting an acceptable lease and who had their hopes dashed. I am overjoyed for those who obtained acceptable leases. The Oil City Derrick article about the cracker plant going to Monaca ought not to have been printed because the information was wrong. But in reviewing my post, perhaps it should have been posted to the Comment Wall. I guess like most human beings, I make mistakes. To the extent that my post offended you, I apologize.
