Hi,

Generally I've noticed wells labelled 1H, 2H, up to 8H.   Just recently noticed 2 permitted wells off of one pad labeled 21H and 25H.   Why are these wells designated this way?  Is it referring to a specific strata?  Any insight would be very helpful.  Thanks!

I think each company has their own convention on numbering of wells.  We are in a 10H well that is owned by Chesapeake.  They number them 1 through up to 12 that I have seen to date.  The 1H, 3H, 5H, 7H, 9H, 11H go in the Northwest direction and the even 2H, 4H, 6H, 8H, 10H, 12H in the Southeast Direction.

Do you know what company owns the well you are speaking of in your post. Sometimes you can google it the name of the company, numbering system for wells and find information.  I am thinking that the 2 in front of 1H, 3H, 5H may mean something but without seeing the other numbers or knowing anything about the well it's hard to say.  Also could it be separating Marcellus from Utica?  There are a couple of Chesapeake wells that have both Utica and Marcellus and I have forgotten for sure but the Marcellus wells I believe had an M in the numbering.

James,

Thanks for your reply.  To answer some of your questions:

Shell is the company.  Our area of Tioga County, PA has both Marcellus and Utica wells.

I'm thinking the 21H & 25H must be Utica wells.  Any thoughts?

Can you look online for a Shell well that has both Marcellus and Utica on the same pad?  In Ohio on ODNR that is pretty easy to find not sure in PA.  You are saying the Marcellus which may have been first over there are 1H, 2H etc and Utica are 21H, 22H, if both types of wells are on same pad etc.  Makes perfect sense to me but I can not confirm or deny.

Here is an example in Ohio for Chesapeake  Bucey Well in Carroll County OH

Bucey 21-14-4 3HM

Bucey 21-14-4 3H

These are on two separate spreadsheets on ODNR so I know the top one is a Marcellus well and the bottom one is Utica.  The 21-14-4 indicate county, twp, section which is how Chesapeake numbers wells here in Ohio anyway.

I am in a unit in which the well is called h8. Does this imply there are already 7 others? Or does it simply indicate geographic position of this well? I am only aware of the one well in this unit.

It implies the potential for 7 others or more.  They are not drilled in any specific order and some will not be drilled because the unit is not big enough.   Not sure about other companies but Chesapeake lays all the wells out on the pad in a certain way so yes it does indicate the geographic position on the pad for them.  Not sure about your company.  As I said in my other post

1,3,5,7,9,11 go to the northwest

12,10,8,6,4,2    go to the south east

And I believe if you were standing on the pad the wells would be numbered how I just wrote them. Our pad has two wells right now 5H and 10H.  I do not believe that on our pad all the wells will be drilled as there are two 640 acres one north and one south so not wide enough to accommodate 12 wells.  I believe that 3,5,7

10,8,6

these six will be it and 3,7,8,6 will be drilled in the future.  Will have to wait and see to confirm this but this is based on the drilling unit we are in being at the edge of the unit and it is #10.  Also based on surveying stakes we saw when it was first surveyed.  We did not see all the numbers on the stakes just these.

Thanks
Always took the 'H' following the numeral as a designation for the word 'Horizontal'.

Agreed.

It would be a great service if the designation was for company doing the drllling.. Why is there so much secrecy about what is transpiring?

In what state are you located? In Ohio there are absolutely no secrets about who is the owner of the well. It is on the well card online, utica and marcellus wells have spreadsheets online with weekly updates that include well owner, county, twp, section, latitude and longitude of both the start and target of horizontal, and each well has a huge board at the entrance that includes copies of permits for wells, containment ponds, emergency contacts, and the well name and the owner name. When you say company doing the drilling ... the owner for example Chesapeake hires a driller suchas NOMAC which is a subsidiary, or Patterson UTI. They also hire other companies for fracking Great Plains for example. None of this is a secret. When drive by the well sites there are frequently directional signs for workers. The dog house has the company and rig number typically on the side of it. The trucks have names and odot numbers on them. Not sure about your state but there is no secrecy here and I am guessing not in your state either. You just need to know where to look for information.

Thanks

Thanks   for the information. Where do I need to go to find the so called spread sheets?
