If an injection well leaks into an aquifer that's a mistake that the operator and the regulators missed. This sort of thing happens frequently with underground gasoline tanks, yet nobody asks for a moratorium on driving our cars. The difference is that any political moves that inappropriately slow down the development of natural gas will mean that more coal gets burned thus contributing to global warming in a way that no impartial research suggests natural gas can match. Not to belabor the point, but an old friend who is in upper management at a large conservancy has told me he considers the anti-gas movement "the biggest threat to the global environment" at present. But he can't say this publicly because they all depend on donations and are aware of what happened to the Wilderness Society when they tried to tell people the straight story. So if you love the environment like I do, you really ought to do a little more research before calling for drilling moratoriums.
