Gas drillers in Pennsylvania find Upper Devonian shale also is lucrative

CONSOL is the third drilling company to tap into the Upper Devonian in Pennsylvania, a move that could provide a boost to shale production and adds to the growing promise of the formation.

On Thursday, Pittsburgh-based EQT Corp. became the fourth player. It announced that it has drilled eight wells in that rock in Pennsylvania, four of which are complete. It expects to drill 22 Upper Devonian wells this year, officials said.

“It’s still very early, but we’re very excited about the potential, especially in southwestern Pennsylvania,” Matt Pitzarella of Range Resources, another energy company involved in the Upper Devonian drilling, told Energy in Depth, a pro-drilling industry group.

Specifically, CONSOL Energy drilled its well into the Burkett shale, the deepest of numerous Upper Devonian shales.

It lies above the Marcellus shale generally at a depth of 6,000 to 6,500 feet below the surface.

Seeking Alpha has an earnings call transcript on all the major o&g players. It is the best thing I have found for finding answers to questions. Part of the transcript are questions from analysts and the company's answers. I have found this information to be extremely useful. You will have to register (free) and you will get email alerts for the company's you are following.

Very interesting article in the Pittsburgh PG concerning the Upper Devonian.

The writer used to write on energy for the Pittsburgh Business Times. She is very good and has the contacts to keep up on drilling and fracking in W Pa. The thing that interests me is the concept that the Burkett is being fracked in part to shore up the Tully Frack barrier for the Marcellus. I have always been impressed that in WVa  where the Marcellus is shallow, the wells are very strong. I think it is in part because the fracks are contained by natural frack barriers. By shoring up the Tully frack barrier with the compressed gas pressure from the Burkett, theoretically the fracks in the Marcellus should be more confined and effective. With shales I am of the opinion that well results are more dependent on the frack than what is contained in the shale. For me it is something to watch unfold with drilling in the shales.

Greetings, I own rights in Greene County, pa. EQT has drilled 12 wells in Morris county, 10 in Marcellus, and 2 in Genesee. They have not come on line yet, but it will be interesting to see how they do. My hope is they play our quickly then EQT can use the wells to drill down into the Utica.  There are 2 wells withing 5 miles in the Utica that are potential major players
