Introduce Yourself
I was contacted by a cousin in Ohio around December 2012 that a person from Petro Edge Energy was trying to contact me regarding land in Tyler County, WV that my grand parents had owned at one time. Apparently someone in the extended family tree still owns this land and Petro Edge Energy wanted to drill (or lease) oil wells on the land. I made contact with the representative of Petro Edge Energy and it took many months to establish that my mother was actually my mother (she died without a will). Anyway, my cousins (about 12 to 14) signed leases and I received a check in 2013 for over $2300 for either one or two acres in Tyler County, WV. I am interested in who actually owns the land, as the representative said that my family "actually owned about 5% of the mineral rights." My older cousin remembers the family living on a farm and buying land around 1935. My mother never talked about the family still owning land in Tyler County (she was born and raised mostly in Tyler County) and it was home for her. I would like to know more about my rights as a citizen in this matter. I don't know exactly where the oil wells are located (probably in Ellsworth District, according to this web site) and I just need good and honest information from people I can trust.
