For two days now, there has been an Airplane flying over Lisbon, It travels from the North West to the South East then back, South East to North West. Is this Plane checking for Pipeline routes or is it being used for seismic testing, The plane has a long pole sticking out from its nose and it fly's very low.

We have seen this plane flying for over a week now . It is definetly flying a grid pattern. Getting closer by the day. flying into pa. and ohio in a northeast and returning southwest only moved over couple hundred feet. should be over us in next few days.  I  imagine it has to do with oil,gas industry being that it is in ohio and pa..  I'll try to get the tail number if it keeps coming around.

Since it is a turboprop, I searched within 50 miles of Salem (44460). These are the only airports that sell jet A.

Honestly it sounds to me that they may be flying for LiDAR data...

I seen this plane this morning , it flew over McDonalds in Lisbon around 9:30 am this morning. Deffently could see pole like thingy sticking out the front, was gone before I could get out of car and get iphone camera ready.

LiDar maps surface topography.

In the Oil & Gas industry it would assist in determining pipeline routes, road building, etc.

It would be most useful in wilderness areas, where reliable topographic data are not currently available and ground access is difficult.

In areas of thick jungle canopy, the tree tops can be at essentially at the same level, masking a rugged variable topography beneath that canopy.

In OH and PA, topographic maps are available.

Road access is available.

OH and PA are not "terra incognita".

The "stinger" (probe) at the front of the aircraft is highly suggestive of a cesium magnetometer sensor (not LiDAR).

My vote is for an aeromag survey.

The size of the aircraft suggests that they might simultaneously be performing an airbourne gravity survey.

The integration of Gravity and Magnetic data are useful in determining depth to economic basement and in defining geologic trends (lineaments).

Hopefully the unusual activity  will pique the interest of a local newspaper or radio/TV news reporter - and the mystery will be solved.

All IMHO,

I agree with Kenny.  LIDAR it is.

Look up "LIIDAR data"  on the web and find the the following and many other websites.

I just saw another aerial survey plane. This one was a high wing single engine with a long probe sticking out the front.  It's not the same plane that I saw before, but it is the same probe.

It was in Beaver Township, Mahoning County. The way it was lined up, it may have been on approach to North Lima airport for a refuel.

I saw the same thing flying west to east in Union Township, Crawford County. Seemed like it was working a grid.

I also saw this plane near Shenango Lake on Sept. 29th.  It was definitely flying a grid pattern and was really low.  I assume they are mapping the area and from the readings within this string, it appears to be either LiDAR or Aeromag surveys.  I don't know much about either, but O&G related activity i'm sure.  Interesting stuff.

Has there been anything in the local news about such activities?

The company that is doing this mapping is a company called DAS out of texas.
