The concept of gross mineral acres and net mineral acres came up in a recent conversation, and although I think I understand it, I am having a hard time explaining it.

Does anyone have a really good source that explains this concept, especially as it pertains to fractional interests in Greene County, PA?

Thanks for your comments.

A man owns 100% of the minerals in 100 acres.  He dies and leaves it to his four children.  They each own 25% or 1/4 of it.  They each own 25 net acres and 100 gross acres.

Thank you GH!
And do you find that most if not all operators only cite gross mineral acres on leases, rather than the fractional or net mineral acres?
This is where the confusion seems to be.
