HBO Documentary
Hello Everyone,
I am wondering how many of you may have seen the recent HBO documentary regarding Marcellus Shale. It was about 1 3/4 hours long and began with an individual who was approached about leasing his land within the New York City watershed and the upper eastern section of Pa. After a section about his property in Pa. the documentary producer then branched out to other shale areas located in Wyoming, Colorado and Texas. The documentary was very negative regarding the exploration of gas. The video showed individulas who were able the ignite their water coming out of the tap along with many other negative details. Soooooo, I am wondering if anyone in Pa. has had similar problems. Any and all comments will be appreciated either for or against. At this time I have not been approached about leasing 100+ acres but I am sure it will happen sometime in the future.

Tom-- Check out the discussion about Gasland by Josh Fox. It's the same film you watched. There has been a lot of debate about whether it genuinely is a documentary or perhaps something else. --Tom

Tom, Thanks for the link to Gasland by Josh Fox. I am relatively new to this site and am beginning to lear how to navigate. The discussion within this link was interesting and posed some interesting questions. I agree with some of the comments made such as: "mistakes will be made", "techonology is improving every day", "reduce our dependence on foreign oil/gas". We don't live in a perfect world and never will.
What I can agree with in the film is the fact that we will not survive with clean water. The other side of the coin that was never discussed in the film was the dollar amount received by the individuals for the leasing of their land and any royalaties paid. The documentary never detailed as whether the individuals ever bothered drilling another water well or if the complete water table was contanimated.
All in all I think the documentary produced more questions that need answered. If one were to base a decision upon veiwing this film, they would be making a poor decision. Seems to me that there are more positive things to state about the drilling that never get reported. The bad and ugly are what sells and the good gets zero publicity!

This little ditty is very old , this was happi'n in tioga co. and in nys 60 years ago . their is a lot of gas in some of the shallow wells .........and salt and sulfur and even a little crude oil coming out of the springs and wells ,
have noticed this for last 65 years lived here for 73 ... ain't nuttin new, just new people having there first
encounter with nature ..

Hi Chris,
You have summed up my thoughts. I had my doubts about most of what was on the documentary but it sure gives anti-gas exploration people plenty of ammo for their fight .

The Haynesville DOcumentary is actually more of a balanced portrayal. Though, it's also more of a human interest documentary.
