Letter from Chesapeake...what's it mean?

we are in Sullivan County, signed with Chesapeake last year...got a certified letter a few days ago, with a survey to fill in and send back, and asking for authorization to do a baseline water test for our property.

 

does this indicate that they are planning to drill in the area?

 

apparently my cousin got the same letter for his property in Black Walnut, and a few weeks later supposedly got a letter requesting permission to drill...

 

so, i'm kind of hoping that this letter indicates that they have intentions of drilling on or around our property.  anyone have any insight?

I got the same letter.  Talked to the company doing the water test.  They said the testing was requested by CHK because of planned drilling for the area.  When I asked, they looked at their maps and told me where the pad was planned and approximate timeframe for commencement of drilling..........just over the mountain from me in approximately 2-3 months.  Not sure what this means at this point but it appears something is happening.

i'm fine either way...but I guess I'm not sure if the letter means imminent drilling in the area?  i can't see them doing baseline tests if they have no intention of drilling...correct?

well, if i'm understanding the whole situation, then I'll take this letter as a good sign of their intent to drill our land or someone's whom we are within a 640 acre circumference of...

Erik,

 

Baseline water tests are usually part of the permitting process, which would indicate that their intentions are to be drilling soon.   Doesnt mean they will be out with a rig next week though.   Still a lot of things that would have to happen.

that's what i figured.  I just wasn't sure if they were doing blanket baseline testing (which wouldn't make much sense) or testing areas that they intend to drill.

They have to notify you if you are in a grid, according to DEP regulations.  We are in a grid in Sullivan County and CHK already tested out water.  Its a good sign, though and within a month after testing the water, the rig is being set up on Roundtop.  Lets hope they find lots of gas. 

Lots of leg work is being done towards putting in pipelines, too.

The water test is free.  It takes about an hour and they do a real thorough job.  They run the water a long time, get right into the bottom of your well, take mason jars and vials of water, test for radon, etc.

They drilled in my backyard practically (chesapeake), but never tested my water , even though their land man said they would. Now they are preparing to frack the well very soon. Mahoning County, Ohio just relased their water testing data and fee schedule. (Attached) They also went over 7000 feet deep, my understanding is that is below the MNarcellus, but I may be incorrect on that.
