Does anyone know what the consequences are if you do not agree to have the testing done on your property? I hear they are laying down the lines all around us. The company told my cousin that if we did not agree we would not be able to be compensated if neighboring deep wells take "our gas". We do not live on the property and have not signed.

PA is a law of capture state, gas and oil migrate to the point of least pressure (a well), some of "your" gas could migrate to a neighboring well.

Terry Engelder (Professor at PSU) stated in one of his webinars that gas migration in marcellus shale that has been stimulated via hydraulic fracturing has a practical limit of about 300 feet.

That said it seems quite a stretch to tie geosiesmic testing to compensation for gas withdrawl. To be compensated you would need to be leased by the same company putting the well on neighboring land and be included in a pool or production unit with the neighboring land. Neither of those two things would result from an agreement solely for seismic testing. Seismic testing would not necessarily result in a well on either of your properties. The testing may make a gas company more willing to lease and/or drill your land, or less willing depending on what is found.

There is a tremendous amount of land to drill on in PA, and the business of drilling is risky, some companies, knowing that some properties have been tested and other not tested, will undoubtedly stick to the properties that have been tested.
Seems to me that I heard that for lands not signed for seismic testing instead of the cables being put down they will bring in the huge machines and thump the ground to try to find any fault lines that may be there. they do not want to hit fault lines because gas will escape and be lost to them. so I think one way or another they will get some idea of what is under the ground before drilling in an area. We saw the machines come through here when geokenetics were just putting down their lines. the lines give them a better reading and they want to do that whenever possible but they can take readings from the road if they do not have access to the land they are looking at for faults. just my thoughts and i am just a landowner, so for this advice and a few bucks you may be able to buy a cup of coffee LOL.
