Once an anti-shale symbol, landowner bows to financial need, signs with driller
Two years ago, Denise Dennis delivered a dramatic denunciation of Marcellus Shale natural gas development at a Philadelphia City Council hearing. She equated drilling to the tobacco industry, and said that “Pennsylvanians are the lab rats” for a massive shale gas experiment.
The Philadelphia resident had a powerful story — her family owned a historic 153-acre farm in Susquehanna County, Pa., where her ancestors were among the first freed African-Americans to settle in Pennsylvania just after the Revolutionary War. She became a potent symbol in the shale gas wars.
“The process for extracting natural gas from shale is as dirty as coal mining,” she testified to thunderous applause at the 2010 council meeting.
“Wow,” said Councilman Curtis Jones Jr., who sponsored the hearing.
But Dennis’ fervor has subsided in the past two years, undone by the financial need of preserving her family’s deteriorating historic farm, and by the salesmanship of the Cabot Oil & Gas Corp.

A dry hole results in the oil company loosing millions of dollar. Loss of capital does our country no good

Bravo to Cabot for taking the high road, they used education rather than coercion. Even if she's not totally convinced yet, when they do their job and drill safely she may become one of the best advocates for the process. Even on this site it would be nice to hear from landowners who have hosted wells and been happy with the actions of the drillers. I know I haven't read everything posted here but I don't remember reading many success stories. In light of what's going on in the world I don't think I can be the only one who would like to read some good news. Hope all had a Happy Thanksgiving!!

Happily, the "success stories" no longer need the information and the support provided by this community.
Sadly, since they no longer need us, they do not come back to share their stories.
That is unfortunate, as we would be uplifted as well as learn from their the details of their success.

Thanks Mark for bringing this news story to light! It appears this landowner is a person who acts on strong convictions based on the facts at the time. What most of us have come to realize is that the "facts" of Marcellus/Utica matters ... and & all things related ..., are written in jello. They are constantly changing and (knock on wood) changing for the better.
This individual kept up on the changes, continued to mull over new facts, and used her head to act on the new information. Would that all peoples do the same, and not be stuck in first gear. Staying up to speed on Marcellus/Utica info is a work in progress.

Sure hope signing bonus is paid after 01/01/2013, after all she needs to pay her fair share. Doubt very seriously it was a learning process. More on the order of greed and envy and to hell with principles.

I think her strong convictions of greed and envy and lack of priniciples, made her sign a lease.
