Cathie - from what I've read - they drill ONE mile in either direction from the well site. And it's not a radius but lies with the fault lines below. If I remember correctly - They drill laterals NE to SE.

Seven miles is not accurate.

The longest Utica lateral well bore that I am aware of, is approximately 8,200 feet from the well pad.

Assuming you had title to the oil & gas minerals and they have been leased to a reputable company.

Typically you would have to live within 1 to 1.5 miles of the well pad radius, and have property situated within the defined drilling unit acreage for that given well to be eligible to receive royalties.  The defined unit can be from 160 acres to 640 acres, some as high as 1,200 acres.  The majority are 160 acres.

The only way you could possibly receive royalty from property seven miles away, is if you or your ancestors reserved minerals on property that far away. In this case you would be deemed very lucky.

Cathie,

I believe you are in the area Shell drills, their units are generally around 450 - 500 acres. The units are rectangular in shape, with the long sides of the rectangle running towards the northwest / southeast. If you were in the unit, the farthest you could possibly be from the well and still receive royalties would most likely be a little over 1 mile, or 1.5 miles at the very most.

I WANT TO THANK EACH AND EVERYONE THAT ANSWERED MY QUESTION! I LEARN SOMETHING EVERYDAY ON THIS SITE.

Cathie,

I've attached a pdf copy of the SWEPI Drake Well Unit to give you an idea what Shell units look like. In this case, the well is located at the northwest end of the unit.

To give you some perspective on the unit drawing, I calculated the actual length and width of the Drake unit. It is approximately 3,000' wide x 6,700' long. The well is 5,800' from the southeast end of this particular unit.
