seismic testing request in Tyler County

I have been approached by a geological company asking to do seismic testing on our farm.  The man's name was Mark Zimmerman.  He wants to plant charges on 400 acres.  He refused to tell us who he was working for.  He wants 2D testing starting in April.  Anyone know who he works for?  He works for an Ohio company but drove in with Michigan plates

Thank you for your quick reply. I am in Tyler County, WV close to the town of Middlebourne.    The gentleman would not tell us who he was contracted by.  He produced a land map, pointed out where a bordering property was having a well installed and asked me to "Help my Neighbor" by signing the one page document he produced.….No contract. The paper he produced aske for 2D seismic testing.  When i declined he stated that I should "name my price" ….he told us that we had a lot of land and they needed to know what was under it for the neighbor's well….  He then said he could force us to sign but they "don't like to do that"  A land man from Chesapeake Energy was here approximately 2 months prior to Mr .Zimmerman's arrival. He was attempting to buy up leases.    We found a gentleman on our property several months prior to that priming an abandoned old gas well. He stated he was working for a man in Texas.

Ruth, do you mean he refused to tell you the oil and gas company he is working for?

Is your property leased?  If not consider if you want the info about your property known to companies that you are unaware of.

As to the plates there are lots of rental vehicles in the area and the plates are from anywhere.  I encountered a pipeline exec on the borders of my property--Florida plates, he was from Texas which checked out and they are establishing  offices in Washington Co., Ohio.

"force" you to sign!?!  No way. "help your neighbor"? How?  IMHO, anytime someone tries strong-arm tactics like that, it's time to send them packin'.  Besides, they should be offering a significant sum for the info gathered, damages, replacement of water should there be any effect, and a copy of the report in laymens terms. Remember, they will be selling this info to multiple drilling co.s for big bucks; don't give it for free.

also, get your water tested before any local (within 1 mile) drilling takes place.

Thanks for taking the time to respond to my question.  Mr. Zimmerman from Precision Geological approached us again after we declined to sign for the seismic testing. He informed us that they ( who he now identifies as Blue Shale and Alta Mesa and inferred Antero Energy) are our lease holders and are prepared to start ""Force Procedures"   We told him we wouldn't hinder him but that we require that whoever does the study must produce proof of lease ownership to come on our property.  He said that I could get that proof  at the court house as it was a matter of "public record".  They are in a hurry to have this testing done and want to start in April and  offered a monetary sum of 3.00 and acre.  Anyone considering signing with this geological company beware

Hi Ruth,

My "two cents":

Insist on a letter from the company with which you are leased (on company letterhead and signed by a company employee  with notarization) stating that the survey is being performed for the benefit of the company to which you are leased.

Absolute rubbish - It is their job to supply you with any such documentation.

 

Personally, I would ask for $10/acre.

I would want an agreement that has a strong indemnification clause.

I would want a clause that details how they will return the land to its "as before" condition.

Compensation for any trees cut, crop damage, etc.
