Water well along gathering line

Would there be any need to install a water well at points along a gathering pipeline? The reason I ask; there is an active gathering line behind my house that is collecting supposed dry gas from a Utica well and transporting to a previously existing transmission line. The Utica well has been producing for around a year and has paid only royalties for gas, nothing for liquids or oil. Last week a small rotary rig (like the type that drill water wells) was set up inside the pipeline right-of-way and drilled for a day and a half and was gone. Now there is a casing there that looks very similar to a water well. This is in Beaver County, PA, in an area where all homes have well water so that would be the only option if they needed water for the pipeline. Any thoughts as to why they would suddenly need water a year into production, or if the "well" they drilled would even be for water? It looks like they are doing the same thing at another location a little further down the gathering line.

joe just found your post I also have property in beaver county where did this occur at? this has been proposed a water line anyhow from mark west same company? we are considering a pipeline any good info would be appreciated   thankx

I doubt this was a water well being drilled. I imagine it was the installation of a rectifier/anode system for cathodic protection. Pipeline companies will often hire water well drillers to drill the holes for these systems. This keeps the pipes from corroding.
