My husband and I live less than 1 mile as the crow flies or the leg runs from the walters well in carroll county, perry township. The we'll was drilled in may. they are back this week with the place lit up like a little city and a constant steady roar.
i assumed they were in a different stage of fracking.
Tonight when we went out side there was a distinct smell like a refinery only not as strong. sometimes it was strong enough to taste.
Does anyone have any insight into what this smell is?
thanks,

Sounds like if they are going 24/7 and lit up they are probably fracking and may be for some time depending on the well. You might get a bit of diesel fumes as a fracking can burn 14,000 gallons of diesel through the equipment in a 24 hour period. The hydration (mixing of the water and gel) has a odor to it but I doubt that you'd notice it a mile away.
Diesel makes sense. I knew that smell was familiar but couldn't quite place it. :) thanks for the info.
yep your welcome
Some companies are now switching the frac train to run on nat gas. Same for generators, drilling rigs, and more. They are doing this because its cheaper and they can get it right from the well head. But it also burns much cleaner so hopefully, the smell you smell won't be an issue in the not-to-far future.
That will be good for folks down the road.
There is a well north of us that has a sign by the road saying "silence by chesapeake." Wonder if that is one like you are talking about.
That smell is........................... MONEY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The BIGGEST smell is coming from the EAST..............Washington D.C.

AboutWhat makes this site so great? Well, I think it's the fact that, quite frankly, we all have a lot at stake in this thing they call shale. But beyond that, this site is made up of individuals who have worked hard for that little yard we call home. Or, that farm on which blood, sweat and tears have fallen. [ Read More ] |
