drilling rigs

We are starting to see drilling rigs in our area and I was wondering about the sizes of the rigs??

 The first one was a smaller one to (I assume) do the vertical drill.  Know the other rig is being hauled in and it seems like much more equipment than other places that are at that stage.  Does anyone know how many different sizes there are for different sites?  This one has already brought in 3 full house trailers for people to live in ---- is this the new drilling site or is more going on here?  It will look like a trailer park before it is all done.  I thought they only stayed for a few months to drill any area.  One site near here had one small trailer to stay in but these are full size homes being brought into the site.  Any info would be helpful --- it seems more is going on here than just a horrizontal drilling site????????????????

I am not sure where you are located but the Alford well site looked like a small city the last time I drove by. Tents & trailers all lit up at night, trucks of all sizes, water lines snaking through the fields and under the road. I think it had six horizontals but am not sure.

Beth, what you're seeing is just a typical horizontal site. The small rig you saw first may have been what we call a 'single', and may have been drilling out the vertical section of the hole. It might also have been (most likely) the truck mounted rig that drills out what is called the 'conductor'. Basically a shallow 'pilot hole' around 20" across that is cased and cemented in preparation for the horizontal rig, what we call a 'triple'.

  Considering that there will be from 20-25 people living and working there 24/7, there is going to be several trailers for housing and office purposes.

  Depending on how many wells are being drilled and how the work goes, all this equipment would be on location for anywhere from a month to six months or more.
