Some of you folks probably don't get the Akron Beacon Journal but a reporter named Bob Downing has been writing some interesting articles about the Utica drilling.

Gas exploration sparks economic surge in Carroll County
http://www.ohio.com/news/local/gas-exploration-sparks-economic-surg...

"Other counties with permits are Tuscarawas (seven)"

"The company (CHK) has boosted the number of drilling rigs in Ohio from five to eight this year.  It may have as many as 20 rigs in Ohio by late 2012 and 40 by 2014, the company said."

"Ohio is expecting as many as 4,000 wells drilled into the Utica shale in the next four years as more rigs are moved into the state. Site preparation takes three to four weeks. Drilling takes three to five weeks more. Fracturing a well takes seven to 10 days."

This is an older item from Lawrence Berkeley National Labs

"What is Induced Seismicity? " ~2010 sorry I don't have an exact date or author of this
http://esd.lbl.gov/research/projects/induced_seismicity/primer.html

"It must also be noted that seismic activity is only a hazard if it occurs above a certain level, is large enough and or close enough to inhabited areas. At some level there is seismic activity almost everywhere."
...
"This implies that if seismicity is induced at shallow depths (less than 5 kilometers) it is most likely that the events could be numerous; however, any one event may not be large."

Commentary

I have yet to feel any of the Youngstown quakes and I live just 40 miles from Youngstown. I heard someone had their Christmas Tree fall over and I know how traumatic that can be.   I would much rather have a thousand 4.0 quakes than one that is a 6.0 in this area of the country where none of the buildings are designed to take quakes.  There was an article that proposed digging wells and injecting water on the San Andreas fault so that the they could lubricate the fault and create smaller quakes so they don't get too large (but I can't find it at the moment).  The injection wells don't make earthquakes, they just lubricate the tension that is built up by the forces that are already there.  I would be surprised if the big oil companies don't charge a fee to Ohio just to save Youngstown from "the big one".

Sorry, since Akron Beacon Journal has started their own special section just on Ohio Utica Shale I don't think this sort of blog is necessary.

  http://drilling.ohio.com/

But there is an interesting map (not sure I know how to drive it, but the permits and wells are pictured there.  (the icons are a bit too large but who's got a better one for the price?)

The are reducing in the “dry gas” but may be increasing the drilling in places with ‘Oil and wet gas”

Jim - Not having access to the Akron Beacon, I find your posts helpful and informative. Hopefully you'll keep them coming.

I go and tell everyone they can get to drilling.ohio.com and now those links don't work.  Go Figure!
