As Congress debates immigration reform among other things, Andrew Cuomo, a proud descendent of Italian immigrants, continues the endless debate with himself over the politics of allowing high volume hydrofracturing into his state. The debates over immigration and natural gas in New York reflect each other – and reflect on us – in some perhaps surprising and revealing ways. Both turn on regional economic effects, the politics of fear, and yes, cultural bias. In both debates, action from politicians, or the lack of it, is driven by perceived political necessity, not necessarily facts or smart policy.
