Recently received a request from a land services outfit that desired to access my property for seismic testing.  The seismic testing, if I recall - was to bury some magnetic devices here and there and presumably use those vibratory trucks to send sound waves out.  Proposal offered $3 and acre.  Any recommendations on what to do?  Land is open, there would be no timber to run over.

My friend had received an offer from cougar land services and only had 2 acres says he got $25 to sign.  I inquired an got the standard $3 per acre and even with 50 acres its not worth it for me.

50 *$3 = $150-28% for taxes=$108 -$75 for the time to fill out the tax form for the1099 they might send.  So I might make $33 off the deal.

We received $3.00 an/acre...have been told to expect them around April/May here in Carroll County.  We are mostly wooded and were told that would not be a problem.

same for columbiana county the person came last week and marked GPS  I went with him on his 4 wheeler to show him where my wells.

you better have that in your paperwork that you signed I put it in my specific about no testing in my woods and they have to come in from the neighbors property.

If things are not in writing them good luck

   

What is likely to occur:

Surveyors show up and place colored flagging so that the jug hustlers will know where to place cabling and plant geophones.  If Vibrator trucks are used as energy source, vibrator stations will be surveyed/flagged. If shot holes are used shot hole locations will be surveyed/flagged.

A few days later, the recording crew will show up to install cabling and geophones.

Within a few days, the shooting in your area should be complete and they will collect up equipment and depart.

In any case, before agreeing to anything, ask them the name of the Seismic Data Acquisition Contractor. Ask them who the Client is (for whom are they acquiring the data). Ask them to detail exactly what they will do and exactly how they intend to do it. Ask them how they would intend to compensate for any damages. Request their response in writing on company letterhead. Get the name and cell phone number of the Seismic Survey Party Chief.

If I were in your situation, I would ask the following questions (in writing):

About when will this be done? (Would this be at a time that would interfere with commercial crops? If timing interferes with agriculture, I would expect additional compensation.)

Will the energy source be Vibroseis trucks using only existing roads?

Or, would they be drilling shot holes and using explosives as an energy source?

If shot holes are drilled, I would expect additional compensation (on a per shot hole basis).

Would there be any off road truck or ATV traffic on the land.

If there is off-road vehicular traffic, you would want any ruts/surface damage repaired.

You are doing them a favor by allowing them access. The data they obtain will be sold by them - for their profit. If they are offering $3/acre, I would firmly ask for $5/acre (plus of course recompense for any possible damages). I would require payment (except recompense for unforeseen damages) prior to the start of data acquisition.  

All in my humble opinion.

One size fits most.
