I was hoping that someone could answer a question on drilling.  I am curious about a comment that CHK recorded on a drilling report that shows the depth / layer when gas is present.  This comment was written on the furthest depth which is the Utica........ what does it mean when it states "The lateral average is ~1482u"  ?    Would that mean the Btu?

Thanks for your help          Don C.

Don-

The mud loggers on site sample, wash, and evaluate the drill cuttings generated via the bit to help correlate the geology that is being penetrated.

They also have gas sensors near the return mud stream that measures the total gas present in the mud, this is often passed through a gas chromatograph that helps in understanding the NGL components in the gas, such as ethane, butane, propane, pentanes+ Knowing the amounts and ratios of the various NGL's can aid in locating more productive rock ("oil window")

BTU is a specific heat content per known volume of gas, which is measured. gas units measured by chromatography are dimensionless in my memory; maybe a mud logger member of this forum could weigh in here and educate all of us.

Thanks Brian.  Appreciate the explanation.
