I have read that a horzitonal connectiona is 9 times better than a vertical connection. If this is true, why?

A vertical well bore passes through 200-400 feet of gas-bearing shale.

On a horizontal well, after reaching the Marcellus the drill bit is turned to make a horizontal shaft which follows the "vein" of shale for sometimes thousands of feet, multiplying the contact area.
