I am confused about the process of drilling a well.

The well near us, the one we have been notified we are in a unit, came in in April and drilled the well…..

Came back in October and set up their small city with lights and cranes and made all that racket for a month.

Now they are back with a small drilling rig making even more noise.

I have seen these little rigs on well pads that were already in production.

Can anyone give me some real info on what these smaller rigs do?

What the step by step process is.   Chesapeake's web page is useless.

Thanks

In my experience, smaller rigs were often used to drill surface holes and install/cement the steel casing that isolated the fresh water acquifer. After drilling and fracing, a small rig may be used to clean out any proppant remaing in the casing, drill out frac sleeves, and install the production tubing. If artificial lift such as beam pumping is used, a small rig (pulling unit) is used to deploy the pump and sucker rods. The small rigs, albeit noisy, serve a variety of useful purposes in the D&C cycle.

Thank you so much Brian, this info is very helpful in understanding the process.

I actually think it's interesting, it's just hard to follow.
