Letter from Chesapeake...what's it mean?

we are in Sullivan County, signed with Chesapeake last year...got a certified letter a few days ago, with a survey to fill in and send back, and asking for authorization to do a baseline water test for our property.

 

does this indicate that they are planning to drill in the area?

 

apparently my cousin got the same letter for his property in Black Walnut, and a few weeks later supposedly got a letter requesting permission to drill...

 

so, i'm kind of hoping that this letter indicates that they have intentions of drilling on or around our property.  anyone have any insight?

Won't take that long for us. We don't have a well up there, just 2 ponds and 2 streams. All surface water.

They are testing all wells and drinking sources, 4,000 feet from a proposed well.  They are only required to test 1,000 feet, but are going above and beyond to protect themselves and you. It also keeps everyone happy. In my area, the riggs were there shortly thereafter the testing. They will send you a very thick, detailed, and documented copy of the results. Be sure to put down all sources of water, wells, ponds, springs and hand dug wells, even if it only feeds livestock. Good luck. Monday they pulled in to drill the pilot hole on the first well on my pad.

just got a response from chesapeake, they are baseline testing anyplace within 4000' of a proposed well...and here is a quote regarding the well site:

However, it does not indicate whether or not you are included in a proposed unit.  Our units are not declared until a well site is producing, typically

I am well within the 4000 foot mark from the drilling site, they are now preparing to frack this well, and no one ever tested my water.

It very well could be. They are trying to determine a base line on your water and if it already has some sort of

contaimination before they start the process. Good idea from the Operators point of view they get blamed even when they don't mess it up. I think you have a good chance.

It probably means they are planning/expecting/hoping to drill near your water. It's important to note that you should ask what they are testing for, as some 'base line water tests' don't actually test for the chemicals used in fracking. You'll want a full test so you can hold chesapeake accountable if your water is fowled down the road.

It is a DEP state law that they must do the water testing if you are within 1000ft of a permitted well or if you have different parameters in an addendum.

We just had a request from Chesapeake for a baseline water test but it is because we are within a 2000 ft radius of a proposed well. The horizontals may be coming closer though I have not seen a plat. I believe that Chesapeake is making this common practice and covering themselves in order to avoid another Cabot/Dimmock, PA situation.

I had a request last year for a baseline water test. I drug my feet and missed out on the free water test. My neighbors and I had a certified lab do our test ter 3. It was expensive ($800.00) but I know I now have documentation which will likely be better than CHK.

Our water was tested by Groundwater Environmental Services (GES) Inc for Chesapeake. Some tests were in-home and some samples overnighted to Nashville ,TN to TestAmerica, Inc. http://www.testamericainc.com/services/analytical/analyticalservice...

We were told we would get A LOT of data in 4 - 6 weeks. Should be interesting to see what is analytes are tested.

I think at this stage, water testing just makes sence.  I have talked to people about their wells.  One man told me about his "cobed" well and honestly,  there is just no reason anyone should just assume water is good, drilling or no.  All this action should make ppl think "what am I drinking?" 

One company made the statement that the price of gas was never to low to drill. They don't want to come back in a few years after your lease has expired and try to get you to take $20 bucks per acre.  Weather or not your well is on line is another story.

 

Some wells in the west have been drilled for a decade or more, tie'n up ppl's minerals.
