Conservation Commissioner Jim Welsh, Professor Gary Hanson of LSUS, and Mike Mathis of Chesapeake Energy recently made a presentation on water management in the Haynesville Shale of Louisiana.  The Team attended the October 10-12, 2010 Marcellus Summit sponsored by the Interstate Oil and Gas Compact Commission (IOGCC).  The Office of Conservation has published online the slides presented by the three Team members.  Lots of good information at http//:www.dnr.louisiana.gov/haynesvilleshale/#summit

I was present at Penn State for the Louisiana presentation. I learned that the Haynesville Shale in Louisiana is found at a subsurface depth of about 12,000 feet. The Marcellus Shale, on the other hand, is located at a much shallower depth (and much closer to the fresh water aquifers) in the Marcellus area. This important factor should be considered by authorities when developing hydraulic fracturing rules. The local geology is quite different in various areas of our country, obviously, and would be a sound rationale for USEPA to allow hydraulic fracturing to be regulated by individual state agencies- the experts.
