my heart goes out to landowners without mineral rights

I see what people are complaining about. If you live in a hot area everything has changed except. If you do not own minerals then the only thing that hasn't changed is your pocketbook. It is dangerous to drive. The landscape traffic housing prices......everything.

I am getting compensated for our minerals but it would be tough to deal with all of this and get nothing. These people need a voice and should get something for their troubles. Alaskans get a check every year for their energy as long as you lived there for awhile. I'm not saying this is the answer but something needs to be corrected. What's even worse is there value of there house and land will fall apart. Would you buy a house land without minerals in the middle of this.....NO WAY. They loss everything and get nothing in return. That needs to be fixed. I want to make a lot of money butnot at the expense of my neighbors.

Maybe my snarky side came out after the week I have had; a better way I could have conveyed my philosophy is that this is REALITY.   Sure I feel bad for a 80+ person who isn't "benefitting" from this boom.   But not everyone is going to benefit!  When I bought my property in 2004, this was not even a consideration.  WHO KNEW?!?!?!   All I hear, though is whining and bitching from people who say "Hey, where is MY share" and yet they are making no effort to better themselves.   This applies to the younger crowd, obviously.   Heck, if I had extra money I could see all sorts of little businesses to start to cater to these guys.   Mobile food trucks at well sites for breakfast and lunch, but that entails getting up at 4 am to make 200 breakfast burritos or lug gallons of coffee.  It takes EFFORT and dedication;  but the majority of people don't have it in them these days.   

Not sure what to do to help people like the older ones you mentioned;  but making some sort of program that will take from those who DO have mineral rights and gives to those who don't, is nothing more than wealth redistribution and we all see how well that is working.    Don't give Washington any ideas!    They try to fix things and all they do is cause more problems.

I like that response so much better. And I agree with everything you said. It is a tough topic. Since I talked to them it has bothered me. I wish there was a way to help these folks and not just give to the entitled folks. There r so many people who get something for nothing. I don't want another welfare program for sure.

There probably is no answer for this.

I think the inconveniences such as increased traffic will be short lived.  I drove all over NW monroe co a few weeks ago looking at the well sites, and it was pretty laid back, like always.  One well I wanted to see, I drove right by and never even saw it or the entrance to it.  I had read the horror stories of roads being torn up, etc, but I just didn't see it.  Matter of fact, I thought some of the roads were far better than what I remembered them in the past.

The oil/gas boom has increased property values.  In the long run, I think it will help most people even if they don't own mineral rights.

The Alaskans get a check because of minerals on state owned land, which is a significant part of the state.   I suppose if the state of ohio would lease some of it's land, like parks, it could be applied towards individuals state taxes.  Don't hold your breath for that one.

Although there are state parks the are generally run by athourities like MWSD. Any money just disappears into their budget or that of ODNR.Any severance taxes are stolen by the western Ohio republicans for their wealthy constituiancy.,so you end up with no roads or money. The crooks that define government are not the answer,as a matter of if you like do own mineral rights but don't wish to sell,you are denied the right to say no. I am fortunate to date that I am surrounded by land tied up in court over cheap leases people were conned into signing.One piece of advice about helping,I started a Metropolitan Housing Authority for Monroe county in ths 80's it grew to be a lot of work and aggregation.

Den I hope you are right. I'm not sure were you went but I saw a lot of changes. My friend lives right in the middle of it. He owns his minerals so he is happy except for the traffic. He drove me around and I saw lot. They do a pretty good job of hiding the well pads but the chamge is evident. I also drive around wv and oh for work and it can be a little dangerous at times. And I'm not sure were you have been driving but since January my vehicles suspension aged 5 years. Bad winter and a lot of heavy equipment.

For the record. I own land. I leased. I also leased a pipeline for 2650 feet. I want them to drill. I just hope we can dole out as little pain as possible in the process.

I went down skin creek, around the rubel pad, past the yontz well, over to the new plant in summerfield, down swazey past the texas eastern compressor station.  My dad helped build the original compressor station many yrs ago.  Went down  Sanbar past some of the HG / Whitacre wells.  I've traveled those roads all my life.  I used to haul stone from Christman Quarry  and Zerger quarries.

Jason I think the 80 something couple is the exception to the rule.  We live right smack in the middle of 4 wells less than a mile from our house and another 8 that are within 2 miles. We have two pipelines crossing our street.  One is finished and one us under way now.  There is a lay down yard at the end of our road.  We both take different roads to work and other pipelines crossed several of the roads in both directions.  We live on a little town ship road that goes out to a state road.  One pipeline crosses that state road.  Then we turn on a county road to go to town and the pipeline crosses that road too.  It zigs and zags.  Some days there are flag people out for safety.  We have had Ohio Edison working on trees and new poles on our street and out on the state road.  The trucks drive fast on the state road so I go a different route sometimes.  Our road is sometimes a mess but mostly good and Chesapeake has been responsive to calls.  This has been going on for about two years now.  We certainly are not afraid to drive but are younger than the couple you mentioned.  To be honest we have barely noticed the work and sort of enjoy watching it's progress.  I do not believe the value of the property will be permanently damaged.  The work will end.  They may come back with a rig for a month periodically until all the wells on a pad or drilled.  For the specific couple you speak of there certainly are some agencies out there who might be able to help them.  We have CARTS a public transportatation mini bus that drops older folks off at Dr., WalMart, grocery, senior center, food bank etc.  Monroe County must have something like that.  And to be honest at 80 something it is time for them to get rid of their car and rely on other forms of transportation.  Toughest job you'll ever do is to make your parents stop driving.

correct Jason,and you have done an excellent job as moderator. Most of us on these sites have some sort of rights whether leased or not so I guess it would be nice to get the opinions of those who truly don't.

Jason,What percentage would you say doesn't own minerals?

 

It's funny, though, how some mineral owners rationalized this (saying the non-mineral owners are lazy) when they themselves are receiving royalities for doing nothing, oh well, a way to assuage the guilt I guess. Non-mineral owners definitely do get the short end of the stick, no doubt about it.
