Ohio drilling units and regulations

I am new here, just recently heard the news of a drilling pad being put about 1/2 mile from our property. I have so many questions :) Does anyone know if there is a radius from the rig site that is considered part of the unit or if they can just go one direction? I've heard alot of speculation but would like to hear from somebody who actually knows. We have received a certified letter for water testing by a company working with Chesapeake and have also leased with them. Is that a sign that we might be included in the unit?? We only own 7 acres, but like I said we are situated about 1/2 mile away from where they are preparing the ground. I talked with someone from ODNR who said they are drilling 6 laterals from one site...what does that mean in regards to the royalties? Thanks for any insight you can help me with!

Don't know much about Ohio rules, but in PA they must test water wells within 1000 feet of a gas well, It could be good news that they are testing your water, I know in PA that is a good sign that you are going to be in a unit, next thing that might come your way would be a division order which would let you know how big the unit will be . Six horizontal  well bores is a good thing because if you are in the unit you would get royalties from all six well bores in the unit. Your royalty share is based on the number of acres you own within the unit and the percentage agreed upon in your lease .

Also on this forum there is talk of wet gas areas in Ohio in which the royalties are better than dry gas, hopefully someone from Ohio jumps in and gives you more information!!

Also probably would be a good idea for you to go  whatever the state dept in Ohio is that regulates drilling and look for permits and find out how to get what are called well Plats that show the proposed locations of the horizontal well bores. Good luck!!

I spoke with someone from ODNR yesterday that said they are drilling 6 laterals on these wells in Col. County. Does having to lease 500 feet on each side mean each lateral leg has to be 500 or 100 from each other? and where in proximity can the pipeline run to the horizontal wells? I cant find any examples of a final production unit map :(

So Mark, do you think by beingb1/2'milebfrom the pad keans we are most likely going to be included in the drilling unit? Do they generally drill in many directions or do theybtend to stay mostly in one direction?

we received a letter for water testing from a company on behalf of Chesapeake. i did call ODNR but they said no permit yet, but if they feel confident they will be approve they usually start the ground prep ahead of getting the permit. Thanks for your insight, Mark!!

If you go to the Columbiana County forum under states you will see each well site in Columbiana county has a post kept dutifully up to date by the member "uticashale".   Find the well near you - should be some info.   As far as building units - the units appear to be be built "leg by leg".  So although the initial unit may only be 120-150 acres, it appears they add to that as they drill subsequent legs.    Also on the recorder's site you can find the "declaration of a pooled unit" and it will have the landowners involved.    I think I may know the well of which you speak... but am not sure.  If you would like to message me, I can help you figure out if your property is involved.
