Ohio's Utica shale is shaping up as a gas-rich, not oil-rich play

The data appears to show that the Utica shale will be dominated by natural gas more than oil. The oil volumes were lower than had been projected, and that’s likely a disappointment to analysts and energy companies.

"It’s shaping up largely as a natural-gas play," said Tom Stewart, executive vice president of the Ohio Oil and Gas Association. "I’m not disappointed or discouraged by the numbers. … But this is a process that takes time to develop."

It is possible that large quantities of oil may still be found in sections of the Utica shale in Ohio, he said.

You'd better hope it's not a horizontal drilling play.  That gets expensive fast.  You want the Trempealeau and Rose Run exploration that Artex is planning to be conventional because it means lower cost, higher returns and more wells drilled.  "Horizontal", contrary to popular belief, does not actually mean "money rains from the sky immediately".

JODI,

Can't say for sure...but if there is oil and gas in those formations you mentioned and the tech and economics are there...they will figure a way to get it out! This presentation from Schlumberger should enlighted you on what is to come in the not so distant future as far as multiple laterals in multiple formations...it's being done in the Bakken and other formations as we speak. Now you know why the drillers want all the formations when they lease.

File was to large..just google the below wordage:

Key Issues in Multilateral Technology - Schlumberger

Sorry to bet a dead horse. But is there any info on the two well in Coshocton county. I can not find any info on any activity in Coshocton. Having a little dispute with a local O/G company. Guy swears that there is no utica prospects in Coshocton, and gets very defensive about it. No names but he was in politics for awhile.

The Roserun/Beetmantown in eastern Coshocton county is over 7,000ft deep.I worked on a rig for couple of wells around Bakersville that TD was 7,200 to7,400 ft. The were good wells. I believe Huff was the landowner. The well that Anadarko drill is only about 12 miles due west. Clinton wells are around 4,800ft. in Adams Twp. I also worked for Perkins Drilling for 5 years. Looks like it gets shallower fast. Just also heard Devon core drilled the Oxford Twp well. There is also afault that runs north/ south through Coshocton Co.

I think some of us know who you're talking about.

Next time you see the guy ask him why Steve Mobley from Buckeye Brine spent over $1 million on his disposal well in Cosochton county....oh and Northwood Energy was a large investor in the Class 11 injection well...who is owned By Stat Oil.

Not that your points aren't valid but injection wells are all over the place.  For a driller they're a very good investment, especially right now (obviously).

they are trucking waste water off wells in west virginia to deposal wells in ohio just because a deposal well is in coshocton does not mean that oil and gas is there too i live on rt7 in wva and have talk to drivers that are hauling water to ohio for disposal in wells over there .....statoil is one of them .....but in my opinion there is alotta of oil and gas under most of ohio .......people need to study up on the evolution of this area over the last 300 million years and u will see we are setting on a oil and gas rich area in wva penns and ohio .....lots of formations even below the great utica .....the utica could just be a drop in a bucket .......a well was drilled to 15,000 feet in belmont county have not heard much info on what they found but it just goes to show the big boys are looking for more

The 15,000' well in Belmont was a disposal well.  And saying the Utica could be a drop in the bucket is like saying hitting the Powerball would be a good start to making your fortune.

Given the choice between being part of a Utica unit in Somerset Township, Belmont County or two Clinton wells in Stark County which are you picking?

the utica is my choose the clinton is going on 40 years of production and the utica is fresh .........the clinton never had wells making the volume the utica wells are making .....if uread my post utica could be a drop in the bucket i was not talking about what has already been drilled i was refering to whats below the clinton and marcellus and utica ......clinton wells and utica wells are like apples are to oranges ,are to potatoes. do u    get it marcus

Regarding the Cosochton county injection well, It always helps when you have close family members who are vice presidents at a large Oil and gas company to guide you where the action will be in the future.
