What can be learned by this map other than where oil and gas have been found. http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/portals/10/pdf/pg01.pdf

The first observation I have is that a lot of wells have been drilled in Ohio.  The next observation is a lot of the ground is still HBP.  If you look at Columbiana, Carroll, Jefferson, Harrison and Belmont there is a lot of white.  My guess, at this point, is most is under lease. If you look west-northwest of the white areas, you see production of the clinton sandstone. I wonder if this oil and gas migrated from the Utica point pleasant shale formation many years ago.

IMHO a map with a copyright date of 2004 is historical, yes historical given the rapidly developing Utica shale play and let's don't forget the overlapping  wet gas Marcellus  in the area of Ohio bordering PA and WV.

The next thing I see is to the north in Mahoning, Trumbull, Portage, Geauga and Ashtabula you see lots of gas production. In the west in Stark,Tuscarawas,Guernsey, and Noble you see gas except the East Canton oilfield.Possibly Chesapeake knew where to look, see what county is due east. Now looking at the counties  of Holmes,Coshocton,Muskingum,Perry,Knox, and Licking. It looks like oil mainly all of these ideas come from the map . I wonder if any of this has an influence on current drilling programs and or what will be produced from the Utica Point Pleasant play.

BG, I am not a geologist, but my understanding is that  these maps are a good preview of where production will be successful.  Remember, the shales are the "source rock" from which all the hydrocarbons originated and pooled into pockets that the shallow wells tapped.  Apparently the shallow well production represents about 5-10% of the hydrocarbons trapped in the shale layers that leaked out over millions of years.  (This give you an idea of the tremendous potential of the new wells).  However, its not all hard and fast because there are other layers and on the same well pad one layer can be wet gas and the next one can be dry gas or overcooked depending on its age.

I wish with all the oil window still open a expert could help out on this . I wonder if there is much information about the utica point pleasant when they drilled rose run wells in Muskingum , Coshocton , Holmes and so on . I bet Oxford drilled some of those wells and I bet they may have an idea .
Maybe artex will core the utica on the way down
I wonder where all this oil came from . I guess with all the company's running for the hills or that new field in Texas , or anadarko to the gulf ,off shore we will never find out.
Maybe it came from West Virginia , Pennsylvania or some other place .I wish somebody could help me wrap my brain around this .I even heard that all they got in Knox ,Ashland,Wayne was water could that came from the Alantic Ocean I know they are only maybe 1000ft above sea level . I had hoped they would find something .
