Can someone explain what determines the optimum well length for horizontial drilling.  I believe the longest horizontial well in Ohio is around 14,000 feet.  Most wells are around 5,000/6,000 feet long or even shorter.

Does it have somthing to do with geology, or does it have something to do with landowners?

Thanks
