In my area of interest, the wells I've seen are initially drilled into either the Trenton or the Point Pleasant.

These are permitted as "Stratigraphic" wells and they are exploratory in nature as well as the basis for any oncoming horizontal well that will follow.

The Horizontal well is separately permitted, and of course, when drilled, will carry the "Lateral".

The horizontal well is the one "frac'ed" and it is done in "stages", or sections.

The trend now is to do more, yet shorter stages in order to improve product recovery.

Go to the ODNR website (Learning curve, here!) and look for the various reports within the site.

Pay attention particularly to the completions report and, where you can find them, reports on the frac procedures. Pretty enlightening. Plenty of really fascinating detail!

MY question is: What IS being done with the Trenton/Black river...anyone care to comment on its characteristics or potential?

Shell is reportedly drilling a horizontal in the Loysburg Black River in PA at it's Patterson pad. A neighbor whose daughter owns land there claims it is 9000' deep and will run more than a mile laterally , cutting underneath her place. Will have to see if it shows up some day on the DEP production reports. Can anyone else add any info about this?
