In western Pa they are testing water sources within 3,000 feet of a well site.

We let them take a water sample and received results. Was more then happy to do so after I asked who and what it was for. Gives a good baseline test in case of problems later. Saved us from having to shell out the money ($800) for it. Only caveat is if there is a public water source near you the local government could use those results to condem your water source. But I'm a bit paranoid.

Like blood tests where all kinds of things can be tested for, the same is true for water tests. Basic level is Tier 1. Quite awhile back Penn State's Marcellus Center for Outreach & Research was advocating that Tier 3 level become a standard lease request by landowners.

What are we talking about here?

not sure what all this means about testing the water on our property was giving a number to call havent called yet not sure what to do

Someone must be getting ready to drill a gas well in your vicinity. They are offering to test your water to get a baseline in case any complaints come up about water quality in the future. I don't see any down-side to having it tested. You will find out the quality of the water you've been drinking, and the testing should be free of charge. Call them and ask questions.

yea i guess there from P.A, they have something to do with the utica shale they say there wanting to check water so hopefully that could be good. news for our area maybe a well soon.

Please, for your own sake ... when you call tell whoever you speak with that you want a Tier 3 level water test.  Also clarify when and where the water will be tested on your property, and have them specify when you can expect to have the results mailed to you. Don't listen to "Oh but the results will be too technical for you to understand."  Whether that's true or not you have the right to have the complete results in hand.

It would seem that drilling may be close at hand.  If you're in favor ... smile!

Is there somewhere that we can find a list of companies who can do a Tier 3 level water test in Columbiana county Ohio?  Thanks

There's a list on the ODNR website.  The well test is for your protection, so you do indeed want to have it done.  If your well gets messed up, the only way you're going to prove it is with a baseline test.

Thanks.  I pulled down a PDF that had a list of the ODNR authorized testing labs.  I called "SUMMIT ENVTL. TECH, INC - Cuyahoga Falls: 330-253-8211" from the list because they were close-ish and had the most different types of authorized tests.

They quoted me around $325 for the ODNR Level 3 Recommended tests.  That included coming to the site to collect the samples and the testing itself.  They have about 18 types testing authorizations, but the ODNR Level 3 test does not include all of those tests (e.g. your standard farm water testing for bacteria, etc would not be in there).  It seemed like the other tests ran between $15 and $45 for each type of test (e.g. Lead/Copper, Nitrite, Nitrate, etc).

They're also willing to hike down to my stream to collect sample there to test the stream water as well.

@ Fang F Fang - just to be clear, they would also test property within the drilling unit as well?

(I'm new here, so let me know if I post wrong)

Ohio Senate Bill 315 mandates a water test within 1500 feet of well prior to drilling.
