Well Pad & Access Road Construction

I have a question pertaining to well pad construction on Marcellus... When well pads and access roads are constructed, who's generally responsible for their construction? Drillers or E&P? And do they do the design and construction themselves or do they contract the job out? If so, are there companies that get a majority of the work or specialize in O&G construction?

If anyone could help by answering or pointing me in the right direction it would be greatly appreciated.

Ben -

In my experience, the well operator and lessor is responsible for well pad/access road contruction and maintenance. Most have standard designs for both and preferred contractors, often a competitive bidding process is used, but not always,

There's a company called CESO that Chesapeake is using is columbiana county to survey their well pads. You see their criss cross stakes at the road edge where the pads are going in.

Ben; just about everything is subcontracted out. Even the drilling rigs are owned by specialized contractors and subbed out by the O & Gs. They will use contractors they have a prior relationship with...makes it hard to break into the business.  If you are trying to do so, I suggest you find out the what subs are working in your area and see if they can throw some work your way. Get your foot in the door doing some smaller jobs and then move up.

Or attend job fairs, trade shows, talk to the Chamber of Commerce. Contact the Marcellus Shale Coalition, a consortium/lobbyist group for the O & G industry.

Thankfully I'm not trying to break into the industry, merely trying to get an understanding of how the construction process works and who's involved. I'm working to get a list of the most active contractors in Marcellus and other plays and who they generally work for. As Kathleen commented earlier, Chesapeake uses CESO and I've found that they also use a company called Kelchner sometimes.

I've found other contractors who list well pad construction as one of their services, but haven't been able to link other E&P's to specific contractors or designers.

Weston Solutions is another company. They tested our water back in June and said they would be out of our area early July. Today I saw them in a very rural area by me with no houses or I know of wells in a different type of truck than they used to test water. I looked at their site and they appear to do a few different things.
