What are the procedures for getting a unit together?

What is the procedures when an O/G company puts a unit together? A relative had their land surveyed by a company, but have not received any notice of being in a unit. The people surveying told them that they were surveying for a unit. My relative stated it has been two weeks since the surveyors were there; and still they have not  received any notices. Any ideas on what is the procedures and time line of being notified by the company?

What state? Who is lease with. Could be months before you are contacted. Survey is for permit application in Ohio. Tons of other paper work. Unit filed in recorders office. We were not contacted by Chesapeake until a few weeks before they came to build pad. We had some paperwork to take care of with them. I think it could be weeks months or even two years in Ohio. Permits last for two years here. Permits can be renewed too. Any landowner in unit can throw a monkey wrench into everything too. Lawsuits, not leased, etc. Just be patient.

OK in Ohio you can keep tabs a little on ODNR website.  Since the surveying was just done this well has not had a permit issued.  http://oilandgas.ohiodnr.gov/  On this website you need to check once a week the shale activity sheet for new permits.  You are looking for your county, township, and Gulfport as the driller.  On the far right are the latitude and longitude of the start and target.  I would use the target for now and put that in google maps.  You can see where the well is and you can  pretty much tell if it is the well.  There may be more than one permit with the same start point ,... I am not familiar with how Gulfport numbers wells from the same pad.  Chesapeake for example uses the well number then on the end 1-h, 2-h, 3-h and so on.  Anyway you can use the endpoint to see which direction the lateral will go.  You should be able to figure out if you are in that unit.  The survey drawings will go on the well card and once you have a well number from permit page you can look at database and see all kinds of stuff for that well.  The drawing for production unit which can include all the wells on one side roughly 640 acres all the wells on the pad roughly 1280 is what is filed in the recorders office.  I am not sure if that shows up at odnr but that is how payment is based not the survey drawing at odnr.  Unit acre drawing at recorders office = payment.  ODNR survey drawing for permit only to document setbacks and other legal stuff with odnr.  Question post them but for now watching for a permit in you area!!!

I am part of a unit in PA. The permit passed at the end of December 2012 and I haphazardly found out (by calling the DEP) that we were in the unit in February.  I obtained the permit through DEP and they started drilling right after Easter.  I contacted the drilling company and they gave me the 'low down' on the whole process.  He said we would receive a 'division statement' after all the drilling was done.  We just received the division statement two weeks ago....other than that we were never contacted by the gas company.  If I had not called them I would not have known what was going on at all!! AND the unit layout that was on the DEP permit is not what the actual unit is.  There were a lot of changes once we got the actual division statement and plat map.  Good luck.  If the permit has been passed you can call the DEP and get a copy.  Don't let some of those website suck you in and make you pay for it when it's public record.

I hope the O/G lets them know if they are in a unit. It's unbelievable that they can do all of that without notifying the landowners! Your info was helpful ....good luck with your unit!

Are you in OH or PA? If PA, the PA DEP has a great website to check for issued permits, spudded wells and production rates.  I've been on there all morning and saw that in our county TONS more permits were issues in the last couple months! CRAZY!

Correction to my post use the start or first set of long latitude numbers to find pad. Make sure you put a comma space in between them on google maps. Dont forget - sign w second number or you might end up in China lol.
