At one time.. the TOP SOIL of the earth was at a level 6000 feet and LOWER....then NOW....

According to all of the Geologists....

FOSSILS... in the Shale etc....

Actually the SHALE was the bottom of a SALTY SEA....which THEN would have been

the SURFACE of the Earth...

SOOOOOO.... My Question is... where the heck did all of the DIRT ROCKS AND TOP SOIL

come from to RAISE the ourter surface of the Earth to the PRESENT level....???????????????

and where did the OCEANS go.....

Space Dust   ??

Tell me Oh smart ones   :)     I'm dumb on these things.....

Plate tectonics causes the crust of the Earth to move about . Its often called continental drift. As the continents move and ram into each  some are subducted under others. At other points they are thrust upward. Thinik of Mount Everest or the Rockies.

Thanks for the response... We know how the "plates" move "across" each other

ie... Africa moves west and creates the Appalachian mts...... but.

that still doesn't  allow for the 6000 feet down to the Shale.....when

the plates pushed up the mountains... still doesn't answer where the

6000 feet of accumulation came from....before the plates "hit" each other...

try again...... :)

I can't tell if you're being serious or just playing the troll.

sorry I cant help you decide...

What difference does it make?  It's there.

Wind and rain and glaciers ground the surface into fine particles. These particles were deposited into layers from time to time and then plants and animals began to grow and eventually die off and also were deposited in great areas and in turn were also covered with water and more particles over and over again.  It is still going on today.

That does sound plausible William...  good response..

But there are THICK areas of depth that have no... plants or animal etc.....

Just layers of the shale..... which is only 50 feet to 400 feet thick... and then

thousands of feet of nothing but dirt.....or sand or odd layers of material....

Also.. the latest theory by the those in the know is.... MOST OIL is produced

within the far depths of the earth and MIGRATES upwards.. NOT plants

and animals.. tho shale oil is obviously from plants and animals....

2 ways ... oil is produced...

I'm still not convinced where all this over burden came from.....

Space dust I think...

Mike needs to take Geology 101 at his community College.

KAR tried to make sense of this and Mr. Fulper's response was rude.

Dear Mike-- a partial sequence of events would have been:

:

1. Collision of plates along what is now east coast of USA.in the Ordovician

2. Warping downward of a basin and flooding of North American plate boundary.

3. Deposition of mud in the marine basin from rivers carrying sediment from an eroding continent

4. Deposition of younger sediments (now cemented into rocks) including limestone, salt, coal, sandstone and mud rocks (shales) during  the Silurian, Devonian, Carboniferous and Permian.

5. Another great series of plate collisions near the  end of Permian with the burial of older rocks like the Utica Shale to depths of more than 10,000 feet and development of mountain ranges  along what is now eastern US and Canada..

6.Splitting up of the continents, starting in the Triassic, to form the present ocean basins, including the Atlantic and Gulf of Mexico.

 7. Uplift, erosion and unloading in area now called Ohio, of at least 3, 000 feet  during the Mesozoic and Cenozoic.

The uplift also brought the Utica and older rocks to the surface in New York, Kentucky/ southern Ohio Ontario and elsewhere.  That is just part of the story. Colleges offer more in courses variously named "Earth History" or "Historical Geology".

Hope that helps.

AHA.... #3 sounds very interesting.....

#2 being the East coast going downward... got it...

I knew something was weird with the Blue Ridge Mts.. as I come West from DC etc

the Earth looks PUSHED FROM THE EAST... not......going South as if the Glacier

came from the North and pushed up the Mts.

2nd time Africa slab came west it pushed UPWARDS.......building up the Smokies

Thanks for the info....

One last thing... that all means that Africa and North and South America are actually

ISLANDS.. floating along the surface of the Sea.......weird stuff huh....

Since the center of the earth is a boiling mass of fluid... from the beginning....

and the SEAS need something to float on.......

did this DIRT ROCKS ETC originaly form from the Center of the Earth ?

If so.... that means the SMALL DIAMETER of the Inside of the Earth is somehow

producing vast amounts of material to build a LARGER diameter to the Earth.

so we are back to where did all of the sudden.... ONE LARGE MASS OF MATERIAL

became the "land.....and eventually broke off forming Continents.....?

then the Continents floated back and forth etc and so on....

Which brings me back to "where did the ORIGINAL material come from "

Alan I appreciate your response and it does answer the formation of the layers Mts etc...

My brain is still stuck on where or how did the original material come from...?

Thanks for your help.....

Space.
