Just curious if anybody has seen continued work by Shell at the old Horsehead plant.  By the same token, has anybody heard any rumblings as to how things are coming along?

Good to hear. PIPELINE projects can be lucrative for landowners also.

I take this information as good news actually. 

One must remember that Shell exited the Bab sour gas reservoirs project with Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC) in Abu Dhabi and the Alberta Tar Sands project within the last few months.  We know the Shell cracker plant in Beaver County makes financial sense but the question for Shell has always been how does the cracker plant stack up against the other major projects available to Shell.  As the other competing projects get pushed back until the end of 2016 or even 2017 or cancelled all together it leads me to believe that the cracker plant is one of the last few projects standing, if you will.  My prediction is March 2016 for the positive commitment to build the cracker plant.  Time will tell........

Shell Begins Hiring for Monaca, PA Ethane Cracker Plant

Yesterday a sharp MDN reader called our attention to a job posting on LinkedIn. The posting, by Shell, seeks a “Technical Service Team Lead Polyethylene (Pittsburgh, PA).” When you read the job listing (below) it clearly states it the job is for their Monaca, PA ethane cracker plant complex. Now this is a single job posting–so far–although it’s for a very important position. Still, our point is this: You don’t spend millions building a new bridge over a highway as a new entrance to a piece of property (see Shell Begins Building Bridge to PA Cracker Plant Site), you don’t spend $80 million to clean up that site (see Shell Paying $80M to Clean Up PA Site for Ethane Cracker Plant), you don’t spend $69 million to move a water intake site and build a new water treatment site for the local town because the current water intake is on the site where you want to build (see Shell Paying $69M to Move Water Plant for Cracker Project), you don’t spend money to lease land to build two ethane pipelines to that site (see Exclusive: Shell Leasing Land for 2 Pipelines to PA Cracker Plant), and you don’t begin hiring people to work on/at the plant–unless you’re serious about building it…

Here’s the job posting that is (as of this date) still appearing on LinkedIn. Notice at the very end it says the project timeline is ~2017.

Job description
Shell is developing a large petrochemical complex in Pennsylvania that will produce 1600 kta of Polyethylene from ethane produced from the Marcellus and Utica shale gas fields. The petrochemical complex consists of an ethane cracker and 3 world scale PE units – 2 gas phase units producing LL and HD and 1 slurry unit producing HDPE and bimodal HDPE all based on licensed-in Technology.

The project aims to maximize the margin by selling product into the US domestic market. Sales in the domestic market require a high level of Technical Service to customers in close co-operation with the commercial organization.

The Technical Service Organization will support new, existing and potential customers on how Shell products fit their requirements, qualifying and troubleshooting product performance, recommending product, additive packages and formulations, and understanding how Shell product performances vis-à-vis competitor on the customer conversion equipment.

The Technical Service team lead has the responsibility to lead all Technical Service Activities for the Commercial organization as well as aiding the development of new customers in target markets. The TS team lead has the responsibility to build and develop a strong team of Tech Service Representatives in Blow Molding, Film, Injection Molding, and Pipe extrusion to a very high level of understanding the customers problems (equal or better than the customer) to effectively conduct customer trials, troubleshoot and solve customers problems.

Manage:
•Providing technical support and assistance to the Commercial organization for all plastics used in a wide variety of applications, to include product recommendations, customer trials, conference calls and product qualifications, throughout the US and Canada.
•Developing, updating and maintaining Shells PE product data sheets, product offerings through licensors and competitive product database.
•Developing a quality complaint resolution process together with the business.
•Staying abreast of new application technology and product opportunities , as well as communicating product and technology trends, competitive activity, customer needs and market opportunities to pursue.
•Interacting with and developing strong relationships with the technical contacts and counterparts of key customers and process equipment manufacturers (OEMs).
•Lead and develop product and application training and further technical development of the PE commercial organization as it grows to maturity.
•Develop, maintain and improve relationships with External Labs and Testing facilities
•Recruit and develop a TS team consisting of a mix of seasoned professionals and new TS talent.
•Develop a roadmap for high pressure HDPE pipe certification in the North American and International markets and lead the certification process thereafter on behalf of the Commercial organization.

Requirements:
•Minimum Bachelors Degree in polymer material science, polymer product engineering and/ or chemistry/chemical engineering.
•Minimum of 10 years of substantial deep and broad technical experience in Polyethylene or Polypropylene in the area of product application technical service and/or product R&D preferably with a major producer, distributor, or polyethylene converter. Experience needs to be of recent nature.
•Broad technical knowledge of commodity plastics, conversion processes, end-use markets and applications; experience in polyethylene film processing (blown and cast), blow – and injection molding will be considered a plus.
•The ideal candidate will be well versed in polymers in general, (additive) compounding and product certifications.
•Ability to establish, participate and maintain strong industry networks and represent Shell in those networks.
•Knowledge and application of polymer rheology fundamentals and principles will be a plus.
•Proficient in working with typical IT tools (apps and web based) and provides advice to build, and improve IT structure of the PE TS organization
•Established working relationships with 3rd party analytical and physical (certified) testing labs.

The ideal candidate will be capable of effectively leading and motivating a team consisting of scientists and application experts. He/she will have the ability to build, lead and motivate staff and work in multi-functional teams in a virtual environment with excellent verbal communication and writing skills. In addition;
1.Comfortable working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment.
2.Ability to identify and deliver innovative technical solutions for customers.
3.Handles adversity, pressure, and business challenges in a calm and rationale way.
4.Knowledge of industry logistics, terminology, processes, and transaction costs.
5.Has demonstrated excellent listening and problem identification skills in discussions with demanding customers.
6.PE commercial experience would be a plus.
7.Experience setting up a new organization would be a plus.
8.Significant time with customers and 3rd parties, strong written and verbal communication, skills and experience building and maintaining relationships is critical to success in role.

Location:
There may be consideration for a virtual location with significant travel to the Technology Center in Houston during initial startup. The position will eventually move to the manufacturing location (Monaca, Pa) in line with the project timeline (~2017).*

According to the Pittsburgh Business Times, Royal Dutch Shell moving forward with former Michael Baker HQ in Beaver County, Brighton Township.  Just another indication that they are coming.

Monday I was told by a MarkWest employee that Shell is working with them for 1 and possibly 2 lines from the Houston facility to the hopefully built cracker plant.
