Utica Shale - Thats good news. I see they have a target depth of 13,329 which is 4,429 feet deeper than the 8H. They're also listing the Point Pleasant as the target formation. They must know whats down there as they're listing the Well Class as a "POOL" over a Wildcat. I dont think any of the wells drilled as of yet had this designation.
Do you know what defines a Pool? Is it just the mere fact its there or is there a size or volume criteria it needs to meet before they call it a pool?
Your insightful thoughts on all this are appreciated.
Marcus,
Okay I think I got it. So if the lateral is13,329' and not the depth. I went to the ODNR mapping website and measured from the well head to the end of the lateral and that was about 6,019' So using the geometric equation A= sqrt of (c2- b2) I can figure out the depth.
With the hypotenuse being c=13,329’ and one of the triangle legs being b=6,019’. The equation equals 11,892’ down. I did the same for the 8H and its depth would be 6,556' The difference from 3H to 8H is that 3H is 5,336" deeper. Deeper than what I thought. Is this right?
Missy,
A difference of 5,336' sounds more like the difference between Marcellus Shale and Utica Shale.
The Utica is only 250' - 300' thick (approx) and Point Pleasant is just below Utica.
Also, regarding Wildcat vs. Pool ...
Could the Vertical Well and the 1st horizontal be considered the "Wildcat" (uproven).
And any following horizontals (#2 - #8) be considered "POOL" since now two Wells are being "Pooled" into one Production Unit ?
I believe the first horizontal well is producing.
I think, there are 4 wells producing of 11 wells completed.
Out of 153 wells permitted to Chesapeake since 1/1/11 until today only 3 of them have the POOL designation. The other 2 are the Harvey 10H and 6H. The others are EDPW or STRT which I'm pretty sure is a stratigraphic test. I just found the POOL designation odd as its not like the others and thought it might be worthy of discussion.

Missy Boardman... can you please give me the location of the Harvey well.
Yep, here's the exact location........
http://www.dnr.state.oh.us/mineral/oil/MRMImages/17/1/220523.pdf
Thank you very much for the unit map. Would you please tell me how you found it on the state site. I have tried without success to do the same. Possibly I do not have the proper software.
Also, I noticed that the unit size is 171 acres. I have been told by Chesapeake that the minimum size units must be 640 to 1000 acres. What am I missing?
Follow this link http://www2.dnr.state.oh.us/mineral/OHRbdmsOnline/WebReportAccordio...
Then click on the word MENU
Click the + sign next to the word REPORTS
Double click the green square next to COMPLETIONS
In the drop , second one over , click CARROLL (you can narrow your search by clicking the Township also)
Now click the word REPORT (upper left )
You should now see a bunch of info about the first well in the series. You can scroll through the this info by clicking the arrow (triangle looking thing) in the areas that shows 1 of 100 or 4 of 6, etc, etc. Once you find the well you’re looking for scroll to the bottom and some of them have links to PDF files such as what I previously attached. Some don’t.
Also, your second question about the drilling unit acreage. When they file for the permit my understanding is this is just the minimum requirements the applicant needs to show. Its more for showing the surface distances, setbacks, etc, (there is a recent post abut just this question here. ( and most are in this 150, 160 range. Anyway once they declare the pooling unit for royalty purposes, they’ll file a plat along with a declaration with the County Recorders Office. Here’s the link to that; http://www.landaccess.com/sites/oh/carroll/shared/tract/tract_name.php
If you need any clarification let me know.
Joe,
The "Drilling Acres" ODNR setback boundaries that you see drawn on that plat map are the minimum acres for a Production Unit. This issue was discussed on the main page of Go Marcellus.
Thank you once again...

AboutWhat makes this site so great? Well, I think it's the fact that, quite frankly, we all have a lot at stake in this thing they call shale. But beyond that, this site is made up of individuals who have worked hard for that little yard we call home. Or, that farm on which blood, sweat and tears have fallen. [ Read More ] |
