Folks, we're not talking about food! In the world of chemistry, the term cracking refers to the process of breaking large molecules into smaller ones. In the petrochemical industry, cracking plants take the feedstock from producing oil and gas wells and converts it to a usable product such as feedstock to produce plastic and jet fuel. The actual end product depends upon both the process and the feedstock. We're going to see major investments in the Marcella Shale region by the major oil companies as a result of cracker plant construction. The actual sighting of these plants will depend upon how generous an individual state cares to be in providing incentives such as reduced property taxes and the availability of pipelines and railroads to transport the end product. The game is on! Here's an article which confirms that Shell has already started the process of constructing a petroleum a.k.a. cracker plant:

Here is another link that supports what I said in my original post:

you know who to call Al.   He has the info your looking for. There looks to be several smaller processing plants and possibly 2 cracker plants based on potential output in the UTICA play.

Great news forth coming for the Buckeye State..

Mark, it's nice to see you back posting again after an apparent month's absence. If you or anyone else has any additional information concerning the subject of this thread, they are welcome to add comments here or post a link to that information.

that month absence was to take a vacation to my island.

A site along the Ohio River in southeast Ohio seems to the top location in the Buckeye State for a proposed Shell cracker plant. River transportation is a key component in the site selection process. The site selection is expected to be completed later this year. Sites in Pennsylvania and West Virginia are also being considered.

A very reliable source has told me that a well known company has an option to buy approximately 300 acres in the vicinity of  Route 250 and State Route 151  for construction of a petroleum (cracker) plant. However, a fellow landowner has also told me he is dealing with the same company for a location further to the east and also close to State Route 151. A primary consideration for the site selected is railroad  accessibility and a holding area for up to 100 rail cars. Such a plant would employ approximately 500 workers.

things are happening quickly...good news comin!

That sure is a central location in the Utica shale area which produces the wet gas.  For the sake of Harrison County and Ohio lets hope this is true.

Check out the national news tomorrow. Good news is here,we will see the ripple effects shortly. Pad sites, pipeline, fractionator, stripper, processor. Which will it be? If you build it they will come.

Al, do you think these real estate deals are about the Markwest fractionalization and storage plants, or is this a separate deal about an actual cracker plant?

Dan, the company's name was mentioned, but I promised not to publish that name.  However, it was not Markwest (although there is the possibility of a JV from my perspective considering the  specialties of these two companies).

Al, is there any difference here between types of plants we are talking about?  Markwest is talking about plants for fractionalization and storage, with no mention of cracking, but you are talking about an actual cracker plant.  Are you using the term loosely so that we may be talking about the same deals here, or are you sure it is a cracker which means that these must be separate ventures?
