Oil company doing title search incorrectly?

Has anyone heard of some oil companies doing title searches incorrectly paying out money to the surface owner and later the mineral rights owner wanting money for the same property that has already been leased.  We heard that this was happening in the area, but were wondering if there was any truth to it?
