I grew up in Dimock and remember all the fun we had at the creeks

With all the drama in Dimock PA, over methane or gas in a few wells, why don't those who have lived and played at the creeks in the Dimock area come forward and let everyone know what fun we had going to the creeks and lighting matches and setting the water on fire. Seems to me this may settle some issues. Just wondering if Mother Nature played a part in the area before the gas companies were even thought of. I am in my 60's and know of several people I played with that enjoyed this as kids.

That is extremely interesting information. I want safe drilling, however, with the massive undertaking there are going to be issues from time to time. Our country's energy security is at stake in the marcellus. If the creeks were lighting on fire that speaks volumes. Thanks. ap

I am all for safe drilling as well and I would be mighty mad if I had my well water ruined, but I think some folks are ignoring or 'forgetting' things we did as kids. As I said I am in my late 60's and lighting the creek on fire was something we did and I'm pretty sure we didn't cause it. Mother Nature was at work long before I discovered this.

I'm glad to see there is someone with enough brains to realize this is not a new issue. Thank you for bringing up the subject.

Local water well drillers can also tell about how many times methane became a problem while drilling for water. Anyone who doesn't believe that can ask local old timers how many times they ran into the problem. LONG before we heard about the marcellus and drilling for shale gas.

In addition, people in PA and NY have been able to light their faucets for many, many years. ALSO not because of gas drilling!

The source of the methane in question is the answer to the question here. One must not confuse methane produced from the  decomposition of organic matter in bodies of water with the methane released from geologic formations.

This just shows how political people will lie to the media, convincing them the gas problem is from the deeper drilling.  You have no idea how much economic damage this has done to landowners, with drilling bans in New York etc. all at the behest of wealthy "environmentalists" from the city who need to feel good about something while keeping decent people from cashing in on something good that happened to a region that has taken blow after blow over the years to its economy.
