"Natural gas filling station fuels questions
Q: I noticed a few weeks ago that the gas station at 1825 Route 309 in South Whitehall [Allentown area] is now selling natural gas as fuel for cars, at least according to their sign. It's listed at $2.89 (not sure if that's per gallon or per pound). Thought I would update you on this story, which has been developing at this station for over three years....
A: You're right Brian, it's been a little more than three years since we took a spin past the Exxon station on Route 309 north of Walbert Avenue, where a compressed natural gas filling apparatus for automobiles was being installed. The CNG "pump" commenced operation in early 2009.
However, the equipment was not available for use by the general motoring public. Rather, it was used to fill the tank of a CNG-fueled Honda Civic owned by Lehigh Gas Corp. of Allentown, the Exxon station's owner.
The pump wasn't intended for retail use, and in fact, that's still the case. The price of $2.89.9 displayed on the station's electronic sign isn't for natural gas, but for E85 ethanol..."
