I forgot to mention that about 30 or 35 years ago My wife and I made butter and sold it to Owletts store in Keenyville. We had eggs and maple syrup that we sold to Owletts store too. It was a great place to shop there until the store was sold. Then the new folks just couldn't make a go of it.

Making cultured butter for sale was a dream of mine. I've made a lot for the family and friends, but doing it for sale required jumping through too many hoops. A legal processing facility would have cost more to build than I could ever hope to make. Maybe when I get rich off my gas well, I'll do it just for fun.

We just made our butter with hand churns on the kitchen table. We used an old cream seperator, let the cream set to sour just a little and start turning the handle. As I recall we let the temperature rise to about 70 degrees before churning. We had a couple of wooden butter bowls and the curved wooden paddles to work out the excess water. We sold maybe 20 or 25 pounds a week. I prefer sour cream butter myself. Oh and that buttermilk... UUUMMMMM UUUMMM Good! Any extra buttermilk went to our pigs or chickens.

Dight Balch made and sold butter to Owletts too. But he was getting pretty old and gave us his butter churns.

I think that maybe Stuart Owlett was shaken up badly when he hit and killed that little girl with his car up toward Knoxville from Keenyville a few months before he quit the store. She ran down her driveway and tried crossing the road in front of him.. So sad!
