"DeSoto school employees to get $5,000 pay supplement
It's the second time this fiscal year for salary supplements. In December, $3,500 was handed out. During the 2009-10 fiscal year, employees received $7,500 total in supplements.
The school system is able to afford the added expense because of the extra sales tax receipts mostly tied to the natural gas development within the parish. According to the March report from the DeSoto Sales and Use Tax Commission, the School Board has generated $52.7 million since July 1 from the 2.5-cent sales tax imposed on purchases. Parishwide, collections top $86 million during the same time period. Adding the supplements to the teacher pay scale has pushed DeSoto to the No. 2 spot for teacher pay in the state. ..."
