Advice and information wanted about Iuka area

I've recently become aware of someone researching my grandfather's heirs with respect to gas and mineral rights they may own in Tyler County, I believe near Iuka. I live out of state now and am trying to become informed about the terminology and issues related to leasing rights and royalties, and your site has been very useful.

I have two questions: 1) Knowing what you now know, how would you advise me (and my cousins) to proceed if/when we're contacted by a company?

2) What, if any, other activity - buying rights, drilling, etc. do you know about in the vicinity of Iuka?

This land has been in the family since the early 1800s. My great grandfather was Eli Roberts (b. 1828) and his father was Gideon Roberts (b 1797). I see on Google Maps an area called Roberts Hill and am wondering if this or a part of it is the land in question.

1) Get an oil and gas attorney. Tyler County has important resources, and there are many things to consider besides bonus money and royalty %, even those are important as well. The terms of the lease are very important and will be with you for many years. Read as much as you can on this site, especially the Tyler county threads but also topics such as wet gas, deductions, etc.

2) Don't know anything about that area - hope someone will be able to help there. What district is that in?

It is in Ellsworth District, I believe, at least according to old census records.

and select Tyler county, and some recent dates to see which companies are getting drilling permits. 

You can go here

and find ways to see where these permits are, in many cases. 

Do any of your cousins live in Tyler County? If you have deeds of your ancestor's purchase of the property and any sale of the surface, you can make sure you understand the ownership situation. 

Is anyone getting tax bills for this? 

I am also an out of state heir, and have been doing a lot of research. The more you know  ahead of time, the better.

I don't think my cousins have ever lived in Tyler Co. My grandfather died in Wheeling in 1949 when I was a small child, and I can find records of him and his brother in the Tyler Co census in 1900 along with their father who was there since before the CIvil War. The land has been in the family since my g-g grandfather came from Doddridge Co in the early 1800s. Where deeds and tax records are -- I'm trying to find out.
