On Water... The Trucking Dilemma

So we have talked a lot here about the specifics of water treatment and how this is done, but one area that I think all of us can agree is the volume of water trucks on the road. I was recently in Greene County PA at a well site and was stuck behind a huge convoy of tankers bringing water to a frac job. I could see the obvious inconvenience and damage that these trucks can do to a community, but oddly enough the efforts to reduce/eliminate them has been fought by ... you guessed it, the… Continue

On Water... The Red Herring

I thought I would take time this week to discuss the red herrings that have been used to divert our attention from the important things going on in the Marcellus Shale and hydraulic fracturing in particular. As you know, the definition of "red herring" is something used to divert attention from a person or organization's actual goals.

The Gasland fiction that premiered last week was effectively debunked here and on a number of web sites YET I did not see this once in the…

On Water... Organic Contaminants

After a little hiatus, we are back with part two of our series on flowback water treatment issues and technology. After water, sand and dissolved solids the next are of interest to all are the free and dissolved hydrocarbons present in the flowback and producted water.

The driller actually adds very little of these compounds into the frac liquids going down the well. While no recipe is the same, the only real hydrocarbons used today tend to be the glycols used…

On Water... Treating Flowback and Produced Water Part 1

A severe criticism leveled at industry (and me frankly) has been that the water resources used in hydraulic fracturing where not being treated and are difficult if not impossible to economically treat. In response to these criticisms I felt that it was important to lay out to the readers some of the issues related to frack water and the types of treatment that are NOW being used in the field. This is a voluminous subject so I will break it down into the constituent parts and take on each… Continue

The Water Red Herring

The Marcellus Shale play has clearly been a game changer, not just in America's energy situation but in a range of businesses that are directly involved in the geophysical, drilling, pipelining, transportation and their legions of suppliers. We assume (correctly) that this cast of professionals can take what was until a few years ago inexpensive pastureland and turn it into a functional gas well providing natural gas and revenue for years. But when it comes to the press and to many people in… Continue
