Attached map shows well locations and well types for several eastern Ohio counties. The map index allows you to select different counties, townships and well types; you can zoom in and out to change your viewing altitude; you can get well information by positioning you mouse over the well pin; newer wells (after 6/10) are identified with red pins, larger red pins identify likely Utica wells.

To view this map you need the latest version Google Earth viewer.  The free viewer can be downloaded at: http://www.google.com/earth  Google limits the number of concurrent data points/well locations - if you open more than three counties at once some data points may disappear.

The map shows some interesting patterns.  The high density green pin areas are likely good  areas for Clinton wells... will these be Goldilocks areas for the Utica wells?   Most of the black hole zones are likely due to poor producing wells and most of the current Utica wells are located in these areas...  do the geologist see these areas as good areas or is it simply that they were available for drilling?

I’d would be very interested in hearing back what others observe, theorize from the maps or know from experience or hear-say.

I don't know, but if you open the Structure Contour Map On The Precambian Unconformity Surface in Ohio layer you will see that the core was drilled approximately 3 miles away from a fault line. Could oil have come up the fault from a lower layer?  I work across the street from the Cleveland Museum of Natural History.  When I go back to work on Tuesday I will walk over and ask the Geologist.  The more I learn the more questions I have.

Marinell, I you might find this link interesting http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Source_rock.  Here is an excerpt:

"The hydrocarbons generated from thermally mature source rock are first expelled , along with other pore fluids, due to the effects of internal source rock over pressuring caused by hydrocarbon generation as well as by compaction. Once released into porous and permeable carrier beds or into faults planes, oil and gas then move upwards towards the surface, an overall buoyancy driven process known as secondary migration."

Here is a map layer that shows the 1986 and 2011 earthquake epicenters and the injection wells that may or may not have caused the earthquakes.

BICS I am looking forward to the new map release this weekend.  Thank you!  You have revolutionized the way these maps are made.  It would not be humanly possible to map every well in Ohio by hand.

I made a map layer of the Belmont Geological Survey Core Records. You can click on each place-marker for a link to the record. None of the cores go deeper than 1000' and where done to map out the coal veins.

Following 8 files contain maps that show Ohio wells by operator.  The first four files list operators by size (number of wells).  The second four files list operators by name.

These maps contain 7180 Operators and about108,000 wells.  Best practice is to load a set of 4 files into Google Earth and select the operators of interest.  If you select all the wells you will likely not have a good user experience.

The well description contains well information and a link to well production data and documentation.

Following well maps have been updated with recent data.  Also they now conatin links to well production data and well documentation.

Utica well file contains all the Utica wells; File1 containts counties A-H; file2 containts counties H-N; file3 contains counties O-W; file 4 contains counties W-Z;  The remaining maps contain map overlays built by Philip Brutz (you can use these to contrast wells to geological data).

In this thread I have also posted files containing maps by operator name and by operator size.  Future posts will hopfully have maps showing Utica theorical drainage area.

These maps are Open Source - please add your own information and repost.  You are also welcome to distribute them to others (if your using them for profit please contribute some of the plunder to a local charity)

What does the Structure Map tell? What do those numbers mean?
